Speed Limit

As of November 2015 the speed limit fields are shown for editors of some countries. These fields should be updated with the official, regulatory speed limit as shown on white, rectangular speed limit signs.

When a speed limit sign changes the speed limit within a segment, the segment may be

cut to create a new junction to accurately reflect the change in speed limit.

{The following section needs review} If the speed limit sign is only a short distance (less than 200') from the beginning of a new segment, then adding a junction may not be necessary, and the speed limit may change at the nearest junction.

Michigan

Michigan has two categories of sign which display driving speeds, and applicable to the Speed Limit Discussion.

Regulatory

REGULATORY SIGNS - Inform the driver of traffic or regulations concerning vehicle operation on the highway (i.e.; stop, yield, speed limit signs, etc.).

Warning

WARNING SIGNS - Advise the driver of unexpected highway conditions which require extra care driving (i.e.; curve, stop ahead, Chevron signs, etc).

MMUTCD - Section 2C.01 Function of Warning Signs Support:

01 Warning signs call attention to unexpected conditions on or adjacent to a highway, street, or private roads open to public travel and to situations that might not be readily apparent to road users. Warning signs alert road users to conditions that might call for a reduction of speed or an action in the interest of safety and efficient traffic operations.

ARTICLE VI. SPEED RESTRICTIONS

(625 ILCS 5/11-601) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11-601)

Sec. 11-601. General speed restrictions.

(a) No vehicle may be driven upon any highway of this State at a speed which is greater than is reasonable and proper with regard to traffic conditions and the use of the highway, or endangers the safety of any person or property. The fact that the speed of a vehicle does not exceed the applicable maximum speed limit does not relieve the driver from the duty to decrease speed when approaching and crossing an intersection, approaching and going around a curve, when approaching a hill crest, when traveling upon any narrow or winding roadway, or when special hazard exists with respect to pedestrians or other traffic or by reason of weather or highway conditions. Speed must be decreased as may be necessary to avoid colliding with any person or vehicle on or entering the highway in compliance with legal requirements and the duty of all persons to use due care.

Ohio MUTCD (Legal Authority)

Legal Authority

The Ohio Revised Code (Section 4511.09) requires that ODOT adopt a manual for a uniform system of traffic control devices that conforms to the system approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). To this end, ODOT publishes the OMUTCD, which establishes standards for design and use of traffic control devices that conform to the national Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) published by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Section 4511.11 of the Ohio Revised Code requires that all local authorities in their respective jurisdictions, and owners of private property open to public travel, place and maintain traffic control devices in conformance with the OMUTCD.

(2) REASONABLE AND PRUDENT LIMIT.

No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard for the actual and potential hazards then existing. The speed of a vehicle shall be so controlled as may be necessary to avoid colliding with any object, person, vehicle or other conveyance on or entering the highway in compliance with legal requirements and using due care.

(3) CONDITIONS REQUIRING REDUCED SPEED.

The operator of every vehicle shall, consistent with the requirements of sub. (2), drive at an appropriate reduced speed when approaching and crossing an intersection or railway grade crossing, when approaching and going around a curve, when approaching a hillcrest, when traveling upon any narrow or winding roadway, when passing school children, highway construction or maintenance workers, sanitation workers, or other pedestrians, and when special hazard exists with regard to other traffic or by reason of weather or highway conditions.

(4) FIXED LIMITS.

In addition to complying with the speed restrictions imposed by subs. (2) and (3), no person shall drive a vehicle at a speed in excess of the following limits unless different limits are indicated by official traffic signs. http://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/346.pdf#page=23
