Continuity in Road Types
It is very important to have continuity when interpreting Functional Classification (FC) Maps and picking Road Types. Part of the criteria for making FC maps is continuity, but this does not always translate into waze flawlessly. It is also important to have continuity when picking road types in general. Thats what this section is all about.

Here is an example of how the FC map does not have continuity.
If we translate this directly into waze using Road Types USA's guidelines it looks like this.
This means, if traveling on one of the two Minor Highway the routing server could possibly not consider this this when trying to get to the Freeway. So we have to make these sections of Minor Highway consistent.
The proposed article title is Ferries

Ferries are large water crafts (boats) that carry vehicles (and people) from one ferry dock to another. Ferries normally have scheduled sailings and are often run as a part of the highway system.

In some states, ferries are a key part of the roadway system and are hard to avoid. In some areas it is important to have them added to the map because they are sometimes the best option, and in a few cases the only option, to get to a destination.

Not all ferries should be mapped however. The following guidelines should be followed when considering adding a ferry onto the Waze map.

When and when not to add
Ferries that meet any of these conditions should generally not be mapped.
*Passenger ferries without vehicles
*Ferries requiring pre-booking
*Private ferries unavailable to the general public
*Ferries over two hours in duration

If the ferry does not meet any of the above conditions, it can be added to the map.

If you have any questions about weather the ferry should or shouldnt be mapped, contact your Regional Coordinator or post in the forum.

How to add
You must have editing rights for the full length of the ferry route. It may be necessary to ride the ferry with Waze running to add that route to your editable area.

#Turn on the GPS Points Layer to see the ferry's typical path. If no GPS point are visible, it may be OK to simply draw a straight line between the two docks.
#Draw a segment from one ferry dock to the other following the GPS points. Name and label the new segment with No City and with the road name of the ferry line. This is often the combined names of both sides of the Ferry. For example: Bainbridge Island / Seattle Ferry. The road type should match the road type on either side of ferry. Do not use Freeway, Parking Lot, or Private. If the ferry is a part of the highway system, then it should be marked Minor or Major Highway. Be sure to set the time restrictions on the segment including the first ferry (opening time) and the last ferry (closing time).
#Draw segments on both loading ramps using the same road type as the ferry. These should have the correct city name entered on each side and "Ferry Loading Ramp" in road name field for both. (Editor Note: We do this step because it gives some separation from the ferry and the ferry's slow waiting lines. This allows for better routing)
#Draw a one-way segment connecting the loading ramp segment to the main road on both sides using the same road type as the ferry. Label it with the correct city name on each side and "Exit Route" in name field. If ferry has clear signs when exiting ferry then you can label the exit road the standard "Exit to:". Example "Exit to: Seattle / I-90 / I-5")
#Draw another one-way segment connecting the main roads to the loading ramp segment on both sides using the same road type as the ferry. Mark is as a toll road if it has a fee in the direction of this segment. It should be labeled with correct city name on each side and "to Bainbridge Island /Seattle Ferry". (Editor Note: some ferries charge riders going one direction and not the other. You commonly see this when ferries are going to an Island where the ferry is the only access, then the ferry going to the island is toll road and ferry going to main land is not tolled. Splitting exit and entrance ramps allow us this flexibility).
Future Ferry Support
Members of the Waze staff and Waze champs have discussed having a better way to support ferries.

Future updates to waze might/should include to better support ferry routes:
*Having a ferry road type.
*Having the ability to add a Point A and Point B, as opposed to a road across the water. This will allow waze to include longer ferries that take more then 2hrs.
*Allowing editors to input scheduled sailing so that waze can properly route based on when the ferry will leave and not just restrict the ferry when its unavailable.
*Allowing editors to input the fare. Instead of just a flat Toll. This way Wazer's can debate weather they want to pay the fare or pay for gas to go around ferry (if there is an alternate route).
*Allow wait time for ferries that get clogged up.

There is no talk as of Feb 2014 of when Waze will add further support for ferry routes. But I can tell you its a improvement that is on the agenda.
Nhanwayhttps://www.waze.com/wiki/Commons/index.php?title=Talk:How_to_add_ferries&diff=56610Talk:How to add ferries2014-02-21T19:59:48Z
Nhanway: /* Future Ferry Support */

#Draw another one-way segment connecting the main roads to the loading ramp segment on both sides using the same road type as the ferry. Mark is as a toll road if it has a fee in the direction of this segment. It should be labeled with correct city name on each side and "to Bainbridge Island /Seattle Ferry". (Editor Note: some ferries charge riders going one direction and not the other. You commonly see this when ferries are going to an Island where the ferry is the only access, then the ferry going to the island is toll road and ferry going to main land is not tolled. Splitting exit and entrance ramps allow us this flexibility).

*Ferries with no set schedule

*Ferries with no set schedule
*Ferries over two hours in duration

If the ferry does not meet any of the above conditions, it can be added to the map.

##
#Draw another one-way segment connecting the main roads to the loading ramp segment on both sides using the same road type as the ferry. Mark is as a toll road if it has a fee in the direction of this segment. It should be labeled with correct city name on each side and "to Bainbridge Island /Seattle Ferry".
Here is how I have made ferries:
# You need to be able to edit AT LEAST both ports. The entire area is preferable.
# Turn on GPS points. It seems like people like to leave Waze on in the ferry.
# Draw a road on the ACTUAL path the car would take.
## Have the road right up to the part of the dock where it would load.
## Draw the road using the GPS points to align with the usual path of the ferry in the water.
# Road type should be "Parking Lot Road" because, ferries are slow. If there is a "High-Speed" ferry, upgrade the road.
# Make sure the road is a "Toll Road" unless the ferry is free.
# Don't forget to use time restrictions.
## The first ferry of the day is when it should open.
## The last ferry of the day is when it should close.
Nhanwayhttps://www.waze.com/wiki/Commons/index.php?title=Talk:How_to_add_ferries&diff=56190Talk:How to add ferries2014-02-17T05:28:12Z
Nhanway: /* How to add */

nhanway: My suggested wiki page.
Ferries
In some states ferries are the best way to get arround, they are hard to avoid. It is important to have them on the map but there are some guidline on when to add ferries and how to add ferries onto the Waze Map.

Ferries Definition: Ferries are large boats that carry cars (or people) from one ferry dock to another. Ferries normally have scheduled sailings and are run as a part of the highway system, but not always.

When to Add Ferries
Ferries are sometimes the best option or the only option to get to some places. But not all ferries should be mapped.

Ferries should be mapped if:
#You can drive on and drive off. (Passenger Ferries not mapped unless significant GPS trace's causing UR's, then mapped as Private Rd.)
#You can buy tickets whenever (pre booking ferries should not be mapped(or set to private))
#Ferry is accessible to the general public(no private ferries)

How to add ferries
Editor note: You need to be able to edit both sides of the ferry and preferably all the area in between. Some times its best to just take a ride on the ferry.

Step 1: Turn on GPS Points Layer Shift+G too see where the ferrys average path is.

Step 2: Add segment from end of loading ramp to the other. Permalink

Step 3:Name and label the new segment with No City and with the name of both sides of Ferry. Example: Bainbridge Island / Seattle Ferry. Road type should match whats on either side of ferry (never marked Freeway, Parking Lot, or Private). If ferry is apart of the highway system then it should be marked Minor Or Major Highway

Step 4: Add segments on loading ramp. These should have City Name field and "Ferry Loading Ramp" in name field. Should have same road type as ferry.

Step 5: Add Segment connecting loading ramp to the normal roads. This should be one way segment labeled with City Name and "Exit Route" in name field. Should have same road type as ferry

Step 6: Add Segment connecting normal roads to loading ramp segment. This should be one way segment. Should be marked tolled if ferry has a fee. Should be labeled with city name and "to Bainbridge Island Ferry". Should have same road type as ferry.

Road Classification Guide
See Road Naming (USA), Road Types (USA)

Most of the state's roads are typed according to WSDOT functional classification, as listed below. Most of the state road types are set to WSDOT's map. Of course, there are always exceptions, so the Functional Class map isn't biblical truth, but if we map the roads according to WSDOT's FC map the routing choices will be a lot better!
Alleys
*Alleys should always be mapped if they have a name.
*Alleys should always be mapped if they are the sole access to a home or business.
*Alleys should always be set to "Private"
*Alleys are normally mapped if they are acknowledged by the municipality.
If an alley does not meet the above criteria, mapping is optional. Leave the name field blank.

Non-Driveable Roads
Generally, if a path can't be driven on (e.g. Walking Trail, Pedestrain Boardwalk, Stairway, Railroad, Runway/Taxiway) then it is not mapped. If it is mapped, it should not be connected to any roads. This is due to the way the routing engine works, as Waze will route users to drive on these "Non-Driveable" road types.

It is permitted to map passenger Railroads (e.g., Amtrak, Sounder, Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad) because some users run Waze while on the train and contribute false data to the system. This false data has been known to effect drivers on adjacent roads. Railroads should be level -5 and locked at the highest level of the editor.

Driveways
See USA driveways wiki page

*Driveways are always marked as private road
Most of the state's roads are typed according to WSDOT functional classification, as listed below. Most of the state road types are set to WSDOT's map. Of course, there are always exceptions, so the Functional Class map isn't biblical truth, but if we map the roads according to WSDOT's FC map the routing choices will be a lot better!

Walking Trail, Pedestrain Boardwalk, Stairway, Railroad, Runway/Taxiway) then it not normally mapped.
