In order to ensure that waze maps provide a visually accurate depiction of the communities New York has taken the position that the lowest level of town name to be used is an incorporated village. In no case should a town name include Greater xxxx Area or (2). If you encounter one of these please use the Cities Form (Link to Form) to submit a correction. In the event that a town name conflicts with another municipal government name please consult with your local champ for guidance. Hamlets may be used as alt name if no conflicts exist with other town names in the state.
Warren Edit: Based on conversations with other editors, it sounds like the below is not correct according to current guidelines. Need confirmation from higher level editors as to the correct guidelines regarding hamlets on Long Island.
On Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties), town names are rarely used by the general population and post offices, and the Hamlet or Village name should be used as the city name in WME. Data on Hamlets and Villages can be found in the Nassau County GIS and Suffolk County GIS systems.
