Wazeopedia supports uploading and using multiple types of files in order to make knowledge items more helpful. This help article will assist you in uploading and managing files in Wazoepedia. How do I upload a file to Wazeopedia?

#1 Go to the upload form

Files are uploaded to the commons wiki. You can click on the upload file link in the tools section in the sidebar or you can navigate to the upload form in the commons wiki by typing in the search box special:upload and then press enter.

#2 Choose the file from your device

Inside the form click the Choose file button and select the file from your device.

Please note that good file naming is recommended in order to help you and others find this file more easily in the future. You can change the file name in the upload form in the Destination filename: input and even change the filename after upload with the move page form.

#3 adding additional information and uploading

Entering a description is also recommended in order to enable free text searching on that file. You can add categories in the description input box with the following syntax: [[category:category name]]. The description and categories can be also set in the by editing the file page.

After you have finished adding the requested information click the Upload button.

#4 Verify that the file was uploaded correctly

Once you have pressed the upload button your file will start uploading to Wazeopedia. In some browsers you will see a a running percentage of the size already uploaded in the bottom of the window.

Once the upload is finished you should be redirected to a the file's page. If the upload was not successful you will be either redirected to a form explaining the issue or to a browser error page in case of network in-connectivity.

Understanding files and images in Wazopedia

All Wazeopedia communities are using the main file repository in - Wazeopedia commons. This means that all files and images served in any of the community wikis should be first uploaded to this main repository. Then this file can be linked or displayed in any of the pages throughout Wazeopedia.

Can we use the same image in different communities?

Sure! this is why we use the main file repository in Wazeopedia.

What are the restriction for uploading files?

There are 2 main restrictions effecting upload in Wazeopedia:

1. Size restriction: file uploads must be smaller then 2MBs
2. Type restriction: Look at the list of the enabled file types.

What are the supported file types in Wazeopedia

Wazeopedia supports the following file types:

• Images: png, jpg/jpeg, bmp, gif, ps, tiff
• Office and OpenOffice files: Documents (doc, docx, odt), presentations (ppt, pptx, odp), spreadshits (xls, xlsx, ods), project files (mpp)
• Document files: pdf, tiff
  

How can I see the files already uploaded?

1. All my files page: the page special:AllMyFiles and the Page Special:Uploads will show you the files that you have recently uploaded.
2. File list: If the file was uploaded recently you will see it if you navigate to the page File list page in Special:FileList. You will see there a list of all the latest uploaded files.
3. Search Suggestions: if you remember the file name you can start typing in the search box in the commons wiki File:FileName.... The search will suggest you with the file if this exists.
4. Search: go to the commons wiki search and lookup your file. You can use words found in the file name, the file description and in the categories attached to the file.

Uploading new versions of the same file

Let's say you have an updated version of a file already uploaded to the platform. It is recommended that you will replace the image and not create another file. The updated file will appear in all the community wikis using it without need to manually update it in the items.

Uploading a new version can be done in a couple of ways:

• Through the file page - navigate to the file page (i.e. File:My file.jpg). in the bottom of the page click the link: "Upload a new version of this file"
• By uploading a file with the exact name. in that case you will be prompted with a message: "A file with this name exists already". This is fine, proceed with uploading. The name should be an exact duplicate including uppercase letters.

How do I delete a file?

Delete file permission is only granted to Wazeopedia champs and Waze stuff. If you need to delete a file you can choose one of these options:

1. Contact one the champs in the Forum or request Waze stuff to help by e-mail.
2. Replace the image - You can upload a new version to the file. This will not delete the file, and the previous version will still be still visible to pages looking up the file page, but it will not show when embedding the file in the community pages. To do this lookup the section Uploading new versions of the same file above.

What if I need to upload a file that is not supported?

More file types can be added as long as they don't pose security risks. Please contact your community team in Waze in the Forum or by e-mail.

Why my file didn't upload?

• A file with this name exists already - Image with the same name already exists in Wazeopedia. If you don't want to overwrite this file please choose a different name.
• The upload is an exact duplicate of the current version of... - the exact image already exists. You are trying to upload an image that was already uploaded before. In this case you better use the existing image.
• File type not permitted - there are only specific file types that are allowed for security reasons. Lookup What if I need to upload a file that is not supported? above.
• This file is bigger than the server is configured to allow - You can uploads file up to the size of 2 MBs. Try to compress your file in order to upload it again.

Technical exceptions

In some cases there might be a technical issues effecting the upload. Please contact your community team in Waze in the Forum or by e-mail so that we will fix the issue.

Can I upload multiple files at once?

Yes. Please use the upload wizard (Special:UploadWizard) which allows selecting multiple files from your device. Just follow the steps with the wizard.
