Toll Roads (Malaysia)

Development and management of toll roads in Malaysia are regulated by the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA). Toll collection and road maintenance are carried out by respective concessionaires.

In Malaysia, there are two toll systems; open and closed.

Closed-toll system highways are the ones which you take the ticket when you enter and pay when you exit, e.g. North-South Expressway. These roads will be marked 'tolled road' entirely.

Open-toll system highways are the ones which you pay toll at booths on certain segments on the highway, e.g. Federal Highway. By right, 'tolled road' should be marked only on segments from toll booths to the nearest exit on both sides.

In the Waze client app, you can select to avoid tolled roads when navigating. Waze should give you a route which avoids closed-tolled roads entirely and lets you enter open-tolled roads with no toll booth segments.

Avoid Toll Roads Feature in Waze

You can now help Wazers in Malaysia avoid toll roads, with a new feature available today in the map editor. Mark toll roads in your area by selecting road segments and flagging them “Toll Road” in segment properties.

As soon as a road is specified a toll road, it will immediately be marked as such in the app, improving Wazers’ routing options. A target of 90% mapped toll roads must be acheived before informing Waze Support, so they can release an ‘avoid toll roads’ setting in the app, so Wazers can choose if they’d like to stick to toll-free routing on a regular basis.
