Street and City names

  • For most road types both Street and City name should be specified. Check the road types for examples.

City names

City names are locked and can be consulted. The official city names can be found via Staatsalmanak.

The BAG is leading, for both street and city name.

Enter street and place names with all official accents. When searching by name without an accent, names with accents are also shown.
Only use one City name, also if a local village or neighboorhood is also known under another name.

City Border

If a segment extends more than 100 meters beyond the town boundary, the segment must be split when specifying the town name so that the correct town name can be stated in each part. The city boundaries are indicated with a gray line in the editor screen after loading the BAG map in WME OpenMaps script.

The representation of place names on the map, the city name polygon, is derived from the city indicated at segments and places. This can result in a certain area showing a different, incorrect location if this area is partially enclosed by the area of the other location. If necessary, check the city and segment city names used.

Street names

All segments must be given a city name and most segments also receive a street name. There are exceptions.

  • If there is a city name and street name, there may also be a road number. When this road number is on the signs (direction indicators and/or hectometer posts), it must be placed before the street name. Such as: N200 - S103 - Haarlemmerweg
  • Some segments are intentionally left unnamed, so the instruction to the next segment is: inheritance, road name inheritance.
  • Leave the street name blank for a short connecting segment - see image - om
    • ensure that when you turn left twice, the second street name is given and to
    • to prevent you from sometimes hearing the wrong street name if there is a different street name on both sides of the intersection.
  • The NWB can be used to see whether a road (section) has an N number. A user-friendly user interface for this data is the viewer.

And further:

  • As the street name for exits, we use the official exit name as shown on the 1200m sign. Optionally with RS. Plus exit number only in the Exit shield. TTS: Exit # ri official exit name
  • If the street relates to a parallel road to a highway, we use Road number - Parallel as the street name. Example: A4 - Parallel.
  • If the road is part of a U-route, the U-route identification, like U27, should be added as alternative street name. Do not use a city name for a U-route.
  • The Street name of an Express Gasoline station place contains the Street name itself plus [<BRAND> EXPRESS].
  • Through-roads and area places such as forests, parks, rivers that extend over several cities, do not give them a city name.

Pronounciation

Remarks on the pronounciation of street names in the Text to speak navigation:

  • The primary Street is used.
  • If the offical Street name differs from the correct pronounciated Street name, the official Street name should be defined as alternative name.

Routing

There can be a problem with navigating to a fully defined destination - house number present or Residential Place defined - when there is closeby a segment with a matching Alternative Street name. For a complete description and the solution of this problem see Routing to matching Alternative Street names.

See for house numbers and also the determination of the location of an address, the House numbers page.
