WELCOME

Welcome to the Alabama and north Florida MapRaid! This MapRaid (MR) committee has invited editors from across the world to come together for two weeks to edit these areas from the Southeast region (SER) of Waze USA. We appreciate your contribution to this project, whether it's many edits to the map or just a few. Each and every one moves us one step forward towards reaching our goal: Fixing all Place-based issues on the map!

How we will accomplish this? All participants will be granted the ability to edit within the complete MR area for the duration of the raid. Each of you will also be attached to a raid group and area (a subset of the entire MR region). Each raid group will be provided a list of editing priorities. As raiders, it will be your task to work with your group to help knock those issues off the map!

MISSION & PRIORITIES

Our mission for this MapRaid is to improve all Wazers' experiences with the client in Alabama and north Florida. Finding a place in search (with complete and accurate business / entity details) and arriving at the correct location in a timely manner is extremely important! To do this, our primary goal is to update as many places as possible and to resolve any existing place-based routing issues on the map.

These are our editing priorities:

  1. Place Point (PP) & Area Place (AP),
  2. Place Update Request (PUR),
  3. Residential Place Point (RPP),
  4. Parking Lot Road (PLR),
  5. House Numbers (HN),
  6. Map Problem (MP), and,
  7. Parking Lot Area (PLA). (Please work PLAs after priorities 1 thru 6 have been addressed.)
Please read this entire MapRaid wiki.
If you are uncertain or have any questions, please consult with your group leaders.

    EDITING BASICS

    WME Settings

    Required Map Layers

Ensure these layers in WME are enabled during MR editing:

Live Users allows you to see other editors in your map vicinity.
Map Comments provide special information and/or guidance for that location (either a map point or area) .

    Requesting Help

SER editors use these formats or shorthand to ask for help:

Change in lock level - Unlock/Lock or Down-lock/Up-lock. Only one request is needed to go through an unlock, edit, and re-lock of an item. (This is explained more below.)
Current Level -> Desired Level, City, State Planned Edits (Purpose) Permalink (PL)
       REAL LIFE EXAMPLE NEEDED

    PUR approval or rejection:
Desired Lock Level, City, State PUR Action Requested Permalink (PL)
        REAL LIFE EXAMPLE NEEDED

Editor Responses to requests. An editor can be signal what he's done by attaching the appropriate emoticon to the Discord post:
NEED TABLE of EMOTICONS with MEANINGS

    Rank-based Editing Restrictions

Level 1 and Level 2 editor map editing restrictions remain in effect during the raid.

    PLACE EDITING GUIDANCE

The Southeast region follows the USA Places guidance. Any exceptions or deviations are explained in the Southeast Region (SER) wiki. If you are uncertain or have questions about how to address something you see on the map, please ask your group leader.

    Places NOT mapped

We do not map these place categories in SER. (If you do find one list on the map, it will be locked to at least level 5 if it has been approved.)

    • interchanges/junctions
    • water of any kind
    • islands
    • beaches
    • toll plazas

We DO NOT add home based businesses or those with an address to a house located in a residential area. If you find one of these, please check with your group leader for instructions on how to handle it.

Mapping Style - Area or Point

In SER, the following place categories are mapped either as an area (AP) or as a point (PP) in exception to USA Places guidance:

Place type Mapping Style Place type Mapping Style
City Hall Area Place Campground Point Place
Government Area Place Car Dealership Point Place
Library Area Place RV Park Point Place
    Museum Area Place
    Post Office Area Place
    Sports Court Area Place

    Drawing APs on the map:

    • Most APs are mapped as basic polygons which reflect the building footprint.
    • Gas stations are mapped to the fenceline or parcel boundaries.
    • Multi-building campuses, e.g. schools, universities, large hospitals, are mapped as one large polygon inclusive of all parcel boundaries.
    • Parking Lot Areas (PLAs) are mapped as basic polygons which cover the lot boundaries.

Place Marker & Entry Point Locations

For PPs, the place marker and entry point(s) guidelines are explained in this section of the USA Places wiki.

Note: SER does provide *additional* guidance if a place is located inside another place (e.g. a Starbucks or a bank branch inside a grocery store).

    APs,

Verify that the Place marker and entry point(s) are in the correct location on the map.

    Special Place-Category Guidance

The following types of places have special instructions with additional information describing how they are to be mapped.

If you have any questions, please consult your group leaders.

    • Shopping Malls
MapRaid editing is limited to places (stores, shops, or kiosks) INSIDE shopping malls. Please do not edit the shopping mall footprint or other attributes.

    Place Details: General Tab

    Name.

Name the business/entity as shown on its own website (or, if none is available, from another approved source).

    • Place located inside another Place. Append to the place name " ( "inside" other place name) ". (The WMEPH script will ignore the information inside the parenthesis and pull the correct harmonization information.)
Ex: Target's CVS Pharmacies are named CVS Pharmacy (inside Target)

    • Gas Stations. Be sure to follow national guidance for how to name special cases. (Please, use a hyphen "-" to separate business names.)
    Address.

A full, complete address will have a house number, road name, city and state.

    • For RPPs, use the "City" name from the United States Postal Service (USPS) mailing address.
    • For all others places (PPs, APs, and PLAs,) the "City" name, and the rest of the address, is determined by the business or entity. Use the address shown on its official website.
    Category.

In general, SER follows the USA wiki place category guidelines. SER has localized guidance for the harmonization of specific businesses, Chain Harmonization Sheet, and category selection for certain types of businesses, Category Sheet.

Please consult your group leader if you have questions on which category to use.

    Description.

If there is any additional information which a Wazer would find useful to know about the place, that can noted in the Description area. These can include.......

    • Business suite numbers
    • Alternate business operating hours (See the "Open Hours" instructions for more information.)
Descriptions for 3rd party Imports ????

    2. Verify that the URL works before adding it to a place in WME.

    3. Use the URL that will take you directly to the homepage for the business or entity

    • For public schools, enter the URL provided by the school. (They make extensive efforts to keep their naming schemes.
    • For Businesses with multiple locations (chains or franchises e.g.), please use the simplest URL that will get you to the main or general business webpage. (Please do not link directly to the a location-specific page.)
    Services.

Review the list of services in WME AND select all those which apply. At a minimum, be sure to determine and note whether or not these services are present: Air Conditioning, Handicap Access, Customer Parking, and Restrooms.

    Open Hours.

    • When the open hours vary because different services are offered (i.e. lobby vs. drive-thru), Add the hours set with ...... the greatest number of open hours to the place's open hours. Note the other hours set in the description field.

    Residential Place Points (RPP)

REITERATE REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL RPP MAPPING

    Place Update Requests (PUR)

IMPORTANT: When editing a PUR, at a minimum, Zoom in to Level 7 (10m or 50').

    Place Update Request

Run the WME Place Harmonizer script to make sure everything is correct and entered. per SER guidance (Go beyond green!)

    Map Problems (MP)

Bring PLAs to region standards before approving and closing the MP.

    Parking Lot Areas (PLA)

    SEGMENT EDITING GUIDANCE

The Southeast region follows the USA guidance for editing Roads. Any exceptions or deviations from that are explained in the Southeast Region (SER) wiki. If you are uncertain or have questions about how to address something you see on the map, please ask your group leader.

    Parking Lot Roads (PLR)

SER follows the USA Parking Lot Roads wiki, except, for the following:

    • Do NOT place U-turns on PLRs.
    • Do NOT add U-turns to gas stations PLRs or PLRs within a PLA.
    • Do NOT map transition penalty segments. (These can be added to solve an issue documented in a UR.)

    Driveways

Add driveways only if needed to support RPP routing.

    House Numbers (HN)

    Segment Lock Level

When you have finished editing a segment, please ensure the lock level is set correctly. If you are unable to lock it to that level, please lock it as high as you can and ask your group leader to up-lock or raise the segment lock to the correct level.

The entire Southeast region (SER) observes the segment locking standards in the chart below.

There are some cases that do not adhere to this standard, such as any theme park type areas in Orlando (5/6). Further, all gates at gated communities / private installation should be locked to at least 5.

Standard for locking roads in the southeast region:
    Segment Type Default locks
     Freeway  5
     Ramp  5
     Major Highway  5
     Minor Highway  4
     Primary Street  3
     Street  1
     • • • • Ferry • • • •   5
     |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Railroad |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|  2

Other roads may be locked higher for protection and special situations (areas with construction, tricky design, frequent mistakes, incorrect images, etc.). If you believe a segment lock level is incorrect, please talk to your group leader before making any changes.

BEYOND MAP RAID SCOPE - Do NOT Edit

Any major issues that need to be addressed will be followed up on by local editors after the MapRaid's conclusion. Please notify your group leader of any large issues you find.

    New Parking Lot Areas (PLA)
    Update Requests (UR)
Please leave all UR's alonge. Local Editors will continue to handle all URs during the MapRaid.
    Toll roads ~ WARNING
REGARDLESS of RANK, Do not edit a toll road segment without talking to your group leader.
(Questions will be escalated to the SER leadership team.)
Toll roads have pricing contained in price files that are separate from WME but linked through segment and node IDs. If any of these IDs or their order are changed through cutting, merging, disconnection or deletion, the toll price file will not work. Much more detailed information is in the USA wiki for Tolls
    Functional Class (FC)
Do not make changes to road segment functional class. All roads should be current and set per state standards. If you do find an issue, please notify your group leaders so it will be addressed after the MapRaid concludes.
    Cameras
New red light cameras are rare. (There are none currently in the MapRaid area.)
If you find one, please notify your group leader.
