Revision as of 16:13, 25 October 2018

Aside from segments, places are key to navigation for Wazers. Most users search for a place by the venue name they want to route to. Without proper place points/areas and information these users may not be routed to the correct location which causes frustration and potential loss of users to other navigation apps.

This raid is designed not only to help tackle New York's high PUR population but places in general. Reducing New York's high PUR count, which helps improve the user experience, but also complete and bring to standards the existing places within Waze. This raid will run for approximately 1 week from the start date.

Goals

Primary

  • Handle existing PURs

Communication

Guidance

Places

When you approve or reject a PUR or edit a place directly, always check that the place details are as complete as possible, and that the completed place follows guidance. New York follows USA guidance on places. The WMEPH tool for place harmonization is a useful way to check that you have followed guidance on completing places. WMEPH can also help identify existing places that require attention due to missing details. When located please make sure to complete the information following the same details above.

  • When editing any place (whether new, existing, or PUR) please be sure to:
    • Add/verify HN's/RPP for places should the user decide to navigate via physical address instead of venue name
    • Any edit related to improving place navigation

Update pending places

Enable the "Places" checkbox in Issues layer of WME. These guidelines also apply to existing/new places.

  • Please wisely approve new photos of places. Check the place exterior with StreetView if possible.
  • New parking lots should only be area places.

Naming Standard

New York State (Upstate) and New York City use different naming standards for places (Schools/Hospitals/Fire and Police Depts.). Please review the NYC Naming Standards section of the New York Wiki for specific examples.

  • NYPD Precincts
    • NYPD - " followed by the precinct number, then the full word "Precinct", (replace the number with the correct precinct number). If it doesn't have a number use the name.
  • FDNY Fire Stations
    • FDNY - " followed by the first letter of the listed apparatus and number for that station. The order for listed apparatuses should be: Division, Battalion, Rescue, Hazmat, Squad, Ladder, Engine. You may add the full name of specialty units (e.g., "Rescue 2") as an alternate Place name.
  • FDNY EMS Stations
    • Start with "FDNY * EMS - " followed by the station number or other title. Use the Fire Station category.
  • United States Postal Service
    • Start the name with "Post Office" and the zip code, if there is a station specific name, put that after the zip code separated by a hyphen (-). Add alternate names for the "USPS", and the ZIP code. Include "CPU" or "VPO" if they are listed in the name by the USPS.
  • Public Schools
    • If the school has an abbreviation in the name, use it. Abbreviate common names as follows
      • Public School = PS
      • Elementary School = ES
      • Middle School = MS
      • Intermediate School = IS
      • High School = HS
      • Vocational High School = VHS
      • Numbered schools should be named with the school type, number, hyphen, school name if applicable.
  • Subway Stations
    • Start with the line (IRT, IND, or BMT), followed by the station name, a hyphen, and list the trains which you can access from that station.

Locking Standard

Places that are complete (correct address, phone number, website, hours, etc. where applicable) should be locked at Rank 2. This is to prevent erroneous changes or vandalism on places that are considered to be trustworthy.

  • Places considered fundamental to the functioning of the Waze app, such as Gas Stations, should be locked to Rank 4.
  • Complex, intricate, or crucial Places such as Hospitals, Police Stations, Fire Departments, Airports, Parks, etc. should be locked at least to Rank 4.

This is to prevent loss of data or vandalism due to automatic acceptance of Place Update submissions from Trusted Users, or Place Update Request approvals from other editors without careful examination.

  • If you do not have a high enough rank to lock the place to the appropriate lock level, please lock it as high as you can, ask a higher ranked editor or group leader to lock it to the state standard level.
