Welcome New Editors

Waze is an app that helps its users avoid traffic and get directions to their destinations. The map must be simple and uncluttered but still show where cars can drive and keep the traffic data that goes with the roads.

Every edit you make can make a big difference to a lot of wazers. Learn about the good editing guidelines so your edits will improve the map -- the editing videos in the app just don't tell the whole story. Our motto is "Usability, Simplicity, Retention". Make it useful, keep it simple, and do not delete.

First Steps

Your edits will show up on the live map after the next tile update -- usually in a day or two. When you are logged in, you will see your points in your dashboard. If you create or change places, you will have to wait for approval from a level 2 editor. See the FAQ for answers to frequently asked questions.

Use the layers icon Layers.png in the upper right-hand corner and tick the box next to Live Users.
Use chat
WME Chat minimized visible no new.JPG. Send "Good Morning. This is my first time editing!" and say what you are here to do. Any available experienced editors will be very glad to talk to you while you make your first edits.
Pick something you can complete in one editing session.
Correct spellings on roads you are familiar with, so they match the signs
Check and correct road direction (one-way or two way),
Check whether turns are allowed or not, and fix them.
Check for red roads and confirm them, connect it to other roads, and fix all the allowed and not-allowed turns to make it route properly. If roads are not connected properly and you cannot fix it, ask for help.

    1. Not Delete roads or any parts of roads -- because that deletes traffic data.
    2. Not Create parking lots or area places, or add roads or lanes in parking lots. This can confuse Waze and clutter the map. Because all your place changes will initially require approval, you might like to avoid any Places edits (points and areas) entirely at first.
    3. Not Make changes to major roads and their ramps or turn lanes.
    4. Not Make changes to roads that are connected to locked roads.
    5. Not make two-way roads into divided roads or highways, even if they are that way in real life.
  • After you save your change, use chat to send "I have just saved my first edit. Can someone check my work in <El Dorado, Arkansas> (or wherever you are located) please.". Select the object you just saved and share a permalink Permalink icon.png to it.
