Introduction
This forms part of UK Editing Best Practice. Editors are encouraged to follow these guidelines.
As the UK has been a self-managed country for some time, we feel it is important that you know what you can expect from us and what the community should expect from UK editors.
The UK is managed by the Country Administrators (CA). Like you, we aren't paid and do this all in our free time. We do our best to help things run smoothly, formally set UK policies and promote Waze in the UK.
We are all in constant contact and closely monitor the forums. You can contact us through Waze by sending a PM to any one of us or by sending an email to WazeUKCMs@gmail.com.
There is no automatic addition to the CA team, and there are no "milestones" you have to reach. We may invite you to join if you show sufficient experience, maturity & involvement with the UK editing community.
What The UK Community Expects From You
- All editors should know the best map editing practices in the UK and Main Wikis.
- All editors should visit the forums regularly. New features & practices will often be found on the forums, as well as help and advice. Forum Private Messages are also an important method of communication between editors.
- Communication (whether through the forums, PMs, UR conversations or online) should be conducted politely and respectfully. As an editor, you are one of a tiny minority of Waze users, and we all constitute a large part of the public "face" of Waze.
- The more experienced editors spend a lot of effort attempting to help new editors. Please show them the respect of listening to their advice and trying to learn from it.
Area Managers
As well as the above, AMs are expected to:
- work to improve the map in their area(s).
- deal with road alterations and roadworks in their area(s)
- respond promptly to Update Requests and Map Problems and take appropriate editing actions
- keep on top of speed cameras - approving/deleting as appropriate
- act as a mentor to other editors, offering advice & support through the forums & PMs
Country Managers
A CM (distinct from a Country Administrator) is an AM who has reached level 4 or 5 and been granted editing rights for the whole country. This is an important responsibility and should not be taken lightly. In addition to the above points, CMs should:
- be editing completely in accordance with best practice as an example to others
- have a good level of communication with the UK editing community
- maintain the motorways and trunk roads and address URs that appear along them
- retain a focus on their original AM area and their AM responsibilities there
- give other AMs a chance to deal with URs in their areas
- deal with unlock requests and, when not fixing, review & re-lock (if necessary) the segments that were unlocked
What You Can Expect From Us
Area Manager Requests
We will try to deal with AM requests as promptly as we can. We will apply the standards posted on the AM Applications topic on the forum.
Rank Promotions
These are no longer automatically applied by Waze HQ. All country-wide rights or promotion requests beyond level 2 are now passed to the CAs. We will expect the requirements above to be fulfilled. In particular, country-wide editing rights and/or level 5 will not be granted unless we are happy that your editing is of the highest standard. Level 6 in the UK is reserved for CAs.
Note that, whilst we will generally follow the global Waze requirements as to the number of edits required for promotion, we may, in exceptional circumstances, promote editors who have not reached the required number of edits.
Dealing With Problem Editors
We are responsible for dealing with editors whose standards do not meet best practices. If you are concerned about an editor, first contact them directly by a private message to try and resolve the issue. If this is not successful, then contact the CA team who will try and resolve the issue.
We will generally try to work with an editor to help them improve their editing quality and we have good results with this approach. However, if an editor refuses to follow best practices or UK policies, there are other sanctions available, including:
- Temporary or permanent suspension of editing rights
- Reduction or loss of AM/CM editing areas
- Reduction of editing level
We will not tolerate editing done solely to gain points without adding value to the map. Encouraging or helping others to do so is also unacceptable. Any mass-editing to gain points will lead to a reduction in editing rank and/or removal of AM/CM editing rights.
Formulating UK Policies
We are responsible for creating and enforcing UK editing & conduct policies like this document. In formulating UK Policies, we are guided by global Waze practices and your views. We will always ensure public discussion and consultation before implementing any such policy.
Maintaining The UK Wiki
We are responsible for maintaining the UK Wiki and approving changes, although we welcome contributions from all. If you feel something needs changing or adding, it must be discussed & agreed publicly first.
High-level Interaction with the Global Waze Community
Most of us are experienced Global Champs, so we are constantly involved in discussions with the Waze community and HQ. We ensure we are aware of the specific concerns of the UK community and that these views are represented at the highest level.
