Waze EV Project

Watch the Waze Communities Office Hours where they discuss the EV rollout project.

Mapping Instructions

Please see the following deck on how electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) should be mapped using the Waze Map Editor.

Some critical points to remember:

  • Do not just approve and move on. Ensure all of the fields under the General and More info tab are completed, and that the mapping standards as listed on this wiki page are applied to every EVCS place.
  • EVCS PURs should only be rejected if they do not physically exist or are permanently closed. Otherwise, approve and edit the incorrect details.
  • Update the Google Sheet once added. To help us track the roll out of EVCS in Australia, update the Google Sheet to indicate it was added and if there were any errors outstanding.

Reporting Incorrect Chargers

As described in the above slides, plugs cannot be edited on EVCS imported with an external provider. Errors need to be reported using the Google Sheet so the external provider can fix their data and push changes to Waze.

Missing Network Operators

Is there a new network? Contact an Australian Local Champ and they can arrange for a new network to be added.

EVSC Mapping Standards

Australia adopts the electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) policy of the USA, with the exception of local requirements and resources mentioned on this page. If the answer you are looking for is not mentioned here, please see the aforementioned link.

Naming

Networked charging stations

Primary Name Format: <Network name> [- <location name>]

If a user-friendly location name is provided by the network provider, it should be included at the end of the primary name following a hyphen. Otherwise, use only the network name.

Exception 1: If the EVCS is a Tesla Supercharger, as per their website, use "Tesla Supercharger" as the network name for naming purposes. In this case, the primary name format would be: Tesla Supercharger [- <location name>]

Exception 2: If the EVCS is a Tesla Destination Charger, use "Tesla Destination Charger" as the network name for naming purposes. In this case, the primary name format would be: Tesla Destination Charger [- <location name>]

Below are some localised examples of networked Australian EV charging stations:

  • ChargeFox - Woolworths Ballina
  • Tesla Supercharger - Adelaide
  • Tesla Destination Charger - Black Tree Hotel
  • Evie - Avenel

Refer to the USA wiki page for full details.

Alternate Names

Add "EV Charging Station" as an alternate name to all EV charging stations.

Note: If there is a nearby EVCS with "EV Charging Station" as an alternate name, this may cause save errors for the EVCS you are working on. To negate these issues, you will need to have a unique alternate name for this particular EVCS.

A unique alternate name can be achieved by adding a number at the end of "EV Charging Station", such as "EV Charging Station 1".

Non-networked charging stations

Primary Name Format: Charging Station [- <location name>]

If a user-friendly location name is available, it should be included at the end of the primary name following a hyphen. Otherwise, use only "Charging Station".

Add "EV Charging Station" as an alternate name to all EV charging stations.

Below are some localised examples of non-networked Australian EV charging stations:

  • Charging Station - Freedom Toyota
  • Charging Station - Hyde Park
  • Charging Station - Westfield Bondi Junction
  • Charging Station - Woolworths
  • Charging Station - 375 Pacific Hwy

Refer to the USA wiki page for full details.

Details

Payment methods

Add all payment methods which are accepted at the charging station.

The charging networks listed below support the following payment methods:

  • Bolt: App[1]
  • Chargefox: App[2], membership card[3]
  • ChargePoint: App, membership card[4]
  • Chargestar: Credit card, debit card[5]
  • Elanga: App, credit card, debit card, membership card[6]
  • EVERTY: App, membership card[7]
  • Evie: App[8], membership card[9]
  • EVUp: App, credit card, debit card[10]
  • Exploren: App[11]
  • JOLT: App[12]
  • Tesla Supercharger: Plug-in auto charge[13]
  • Tesla Destination Charger: These are often free, but they may also have restrictions applied by the owners.

Chargers

The Chargers tab shows the chargers and plugs available at the charging station.

The Chargers tab will be read-only on charging stations linked to an external provider. If you find an error in the Chargers tab, mark it in the spreadsheet (if applicable), or reach out to your (A)RC so they can address it with staff or the external provider.

Plugs

Below are the common plugs used in Australia:

  • CCS2 - European counterpart to CCS1 which combines DC fast charging lower pins with the Type 2 plug instead of the J1772 plug.
  • CHAdeMO - a DC fast charging plug.
  • J1772 - Also known as "Type 1".
  • Type 2 (Mennekes) - The European standard for AC charging (similar to our J1772 standard, but with a different plug).
