This wiki page is in draft and is not to be utilised for mapping purposes.

Australia adopts the electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) policy of the USA (click here to read), with the below-mentioned exceptions and resources.

Mapping Instructions

Please see the following deck on how electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) should be mapped using the Waze Map Editor.

Some critical points to remember:

  • Do not just approve and move on. The mapping standards as listed in this wiki page need to be applied to each new and existing EVCS, to bring it up to the high quality our users will expect.
  • EVCS PURs should only be rejected if they do not physically exist or are permanently closed. Otherwise, approve and edit the incorrect details.

Naming

Networked charging stations

Refer to the USA wiki page for full details. Below are some localised examples of naming networked Australian EV charging stations.

Examples
Network Location Name (from provider) Waze Place Primary Name
Electrify America Walmart 402 Breaux Bridge Electrify America - Walmart 402
Electrify America Gulfport Premium Outlets Electrify America - Gulfport Premium Outlets
Tesla Supercharger Metairie, LA Tesla Supercharger - Metairie, LA
Tesla Supercharger Las Vegas, NV - Bridger Avenue Tesla Supercharger - Bridger Avenue
Tesla Destination Charger Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa Tesla Destination Charger - Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa
Francis Energy Boston Avenue United Methodist Church Francis Energy - Boston Avenue United Methodist Church
ChargePoint ENTERGY NO LVL2 / LAFITTEGREENWAY ChargePoint - Lafitte Greenway
ChargePoint ENTERGY NO LVL2 / ROSENWALD REC ChargePoint - Rosenwald Recreation Center

Add "EV Charging Station" as an alternate name to all EV charging stations.

Non-networked charging stations

Refer to the USA wiki page for full details. Below are some localised examples of naming non-networked Australian EV charging stations.

  • Charging Station - Freedom Nissan
  • Charging Station - Pontchartrain Park
  • Charging Station - Premium Parking P376
  • Charging Station - Whole Foods
  • Charging Station - 11375 Haddaway Blvd

Add "EV Charging Station" as an alternate name to all EV charging stations.

Details

Payment methods

Add all payment methods which are accepted at the charging station.

The charging networks listed below support the following payment methods:

  • Blink: App, Membership card, Plug-in autocharge, Other[1][2]
  • ChargePoint: App, Credit card (note: contactless only) Membership card[3]
  • Electrify America: App, Credit card, Debit card, Membership card[4], Plug-in autocharge[5]
  • EVgo: App, Credit card, Debit card, Plug-in autocharge[6]
  • SemaConnect: App, Membership card, Other[1]
  • Tesla Supercharger: Plug-in autocharge

Chargers

The Chargers tab shows the chargers and plugs available at the charging station.

The Chargers tab will be read-only on charging stations linked to an external provider. If you find an error in the Chargers tab, mark it in the spreadsheet (if applicable), or reach out to your (A)RC so they can address it with staff or the external provider.

Plugs

7 plug types are available in WME. Of these, 4 (with their names in bold below) are commonly found in Australia.

  • CCS1 - the standard plug for DC fast charging in North America. Also known as "CCS Combo 1". Except the Nissan Leaf and all Tesla models, all new EVs which support DC fast charging include the CCS1 plug. The CCS1 plug is made up of a J1772 plug and two lower pins for DC fast charging.
  • CCS2 - not used in North America. European counterpart to CCS1 which combines DC fast charging lower pins with the Type 2 plug instead of the J1772 plug.
  • CHAdeMO - a DC fast charging plug which is becoming uncommon in North America but is still used by a handful of EVs. The Nissan Leaf is the only car currently on sale in the U.S. with a CHAdeMO plug.
  • GB/T - not used in the United States. The standard in China.
  • J1772 - the standard plug for AC charging in the United States. Also known as "Type 1". All EVs on sale today support J1772 – built-into most cars, and via an included adapter for Tesla vehicles.
  • Tesla - the plug used by all Tesla models sold in North America. Also known as "North American Charging Standard" or "NACS".
  • Type 2 (Mennekes) - not used in North America. The European standard for AC charging (similar to our J1772 standard, but with a different plug).

† Shell Recharge PURs may be imported with the name Greenlots Charging Station.

* Name: ChargePoint location names are often ugly and sometimes non-descriptive, and listed per individual charger (not per charging station). For example, the chargers located together in the New Orleans International Airport long-term parking garage are named "EZ-PARKER STATION1" through "EZ-PARKER STATION9", and chargers installed by the City of New Orleans in partnership with local utility Entergy all start with the string "ENTERGY NO LVL2" and have names like "ENTERGY NO LVL2 CTY PK GOLF CRS" and "ENTERGY NO LVL2 AUDUBON ZOO 2". The station containing these chargers should be named "ChargePoint - MSY Long Term Garage", "ChargePoint - City Park Golf Course", and "ChargePoint - Audubon Zoo", respectively. Payment & Description: ChargePoint chargers can be activated by the ChargePoint app or by NFC. Specifically, whether free or paid, ChargePoint chargers can be activated by using a ChargePoint membership card or a credit card, either using NFC on a supported physical card or by using a supported mobile wallet. In the description field, include a note, “Activate with ChargePoint membership card, ChargePoint app, or a contactless credit card”.

** Tesla Supercharger and Electrify America locations typically include a city name in the location name. If the name is more than just a city name (with or without state), remove the city and state name component (but don't remove a city name that is part of the name of something else, such as "Pensacola Square" or "Gulfport Premium Outlets").

*** EVgo location names are easiest to find in the EVgo mobile app. Oddly, in the web locator, EVgo location names show up in the search box when you click on a location. EVgo also names their individual chargers with people names, so be sure to use the station name ("Cracker Barrel" or "H-E-B") and not the charger name ("Cooper" or "Deonte").
