EV Charging Stations

Do not add any any private charging stations at this time. Also, the order and tooltip descriptions of restricted and private are inaccurate/reversed. See Access type to ensure the accurate assignment of these attributes.

As plug-in electric vehicles become more popular, access to EV charging stations becomes more important than ever, especially given infrastructure challenges. Follow these guidelines to ensure that we provide a uniform experience to Wazers who drive or operate plug-in electric vehicles.

Placement

As with any Place, place the EV charging station as near to the actual location of the chargers as possible, so that drivers are navigated directly to the chargers. Consider adding parking lot roads where needed.

Use the satellite imagery layer and Street View to locate charging stations within a parking lot. Many charging stations can be located from satellite imagery alone—similarly to accessible parking spaces, EV charging spaces are typically distinguished from standard parking spaces with painted words or iconography.

Within a parking garage or other covered parking area, place the charging station so that users are navigated into the garage, and be sure to include any helpful information in the "Location at venue" field (described below).

Naming

Some EV charging stations are part of a national or regional network. These are known as "networked" charging stations. Charging stations that are not part of a network are known as "non-networked" charging stations.

Networked charging stations

The primary name of a networked charging station should always start with the network name.

In some situations, you should also add a location name, separated from the network name by a hyphen. Specifically:

• If the network provider provides user-friendly names for its charging stations, and the name is more than just a city name (with or without state), then add the location name after a hyphen, but remove the city and state (if it matches the city and state in the address).
  • Don't remove a city name that is part of another name (such as "Gulfport Premium Outlets" or "Pensacola Square").
  • The location name should generally match the name used by the charging network, if the charging network name is user-friendly. ChargePoint names are not generally user-friendly.
• If the charging station is associated with another place (and doesn't have an official name as described above), then use the name of that place as the location name.

Non-networked charging stations

Non-networked charging stations should be named with the words "Charging Station", followed by a hyphen, followed by the location name. If possible, determine the location name the same way you would for a networked charger (including by using the name of an associated place). If there is no name or associated place, simply name it "Charging Station". For example,

Details

Description

Include information on any charger activation requirements which are not related to the charger itself, such as "See front desk to activate" or "See valet to activate".

Include information on session length restrictions, such as "2 hours max".

For ChargePoint chargers, include a note such as “Activate with ChargePoint membership card, ChargePoint app, or a contactless credit card”.

Otherwise, follow the standard guidance for a Place description, but without duplicating any information that is located in other fields (in other words, don't include location at venue, chargers, plugs, speed, or similar info here if it is already provided somewhere else).

Location at venue

EV charging stations can be hard to find. Include a short description wherever possible to help drivers find the station. For example,

• On the western edge of the parking lot.
• On the 6th floor lower level of the parking garage.
• Near the front door, to the left (when looking at the building from the parking lot).
• In the Rudy's BBQ parking lot east of the building.

Network

Include the network for networked chargers. Do not include a network for non-networked chargers.

Price

Use Paid if the average driver needs to pay to charge at the charging station, including

• commercial parking facilities, even if you only pay once for parking (and charging is included in the parking rate);
• paid DC fast chargers, even if some drivers have free charging plans associated with their vehicles.

Use Free if the average driver can charge without paying.

Payment methods

Add any and all payment methods which are accepted at the charging station.

• App if the user can start and pay for charging using a mobile app downloaded from the App Store, Play Store, or similar.
• Credit card or Debit card if the user can start and pay for charging with a credit or debit card without using an app or web browser.
• Membership card if the user can start and pay for charging using a membership card (whether a physical card or a mobile wallet card) issued by the charging network operator.
• Online payment if the user can start and pay for charging using an online payment without using an app that you have to download.
• Plug-in autocharge if the user can start and pay for charging by simply plugging in the car without requiring any further interaction.
• Other if the user can pay with a method not listed above (including, for example, cash at a parking garage or valet parking service, or by calling a customer service line).

The charging networks listed below support the following payment methods:

• Blink: App, Membership card, Plug-in autocharge, Other
• ChargePoint: App, Credit card (note: contactless only) Membership card
• Electrify America: App, Credit card, Debit card, Membership card, Plug-in autocharge
• EVgo: App, Credit card, Debit card, Plug-in autocharge
• SemaConnect: App, Membership card, Other
• Tesla Supercharger: Plug-in autocharge

Lock

Charging stations should be locked at a minimum of level 4.

Chargers

The Chargers tab shows the chargers and plugs which are available at the charging station.

Waze follows the Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) protocol, which follows the structure Charging station » Charger » Plug.

• A charging station is a place that has at least one charger. Generally, each charging station should have its own Place. A single charging station may have multiple types of chargers.
• A charger is, by definition, the amount of hardware needed to charge one vehicle. In other words, the number of chargers at a charging station should be equal to the number of the vehicles that can charge there (parking space notwithstanding).
  • A single piece of hardware contains 2 chargers if it can charge 2 vehicles at the same time. However, a piece of hardware with multiple plugs that can only charge one vehicle at a time is a single charger. A charging network provider's "availability" indicators can provide a good hint.
  • The number at the beginning of each charger line item indicates the number of chargers sharing the same attributes (speed and plugs). Multiple chargers with the same attributes may be represented either as separate lines or as a single line. For example, one line that says "3 with 7 kW, J1772" is the same as 3 lines that each say "1 with 7 kW, J1772".
• A plug is the part of the cable that connects to the vehicle. Some chargers have more than one plug, but allow only one vehicle to charge at a time.
  • In WME, the plugs added to each charger indicate the types of plug at that charger, not necessarily the number of plugs at that charger. A single charger with two CCS1 plugs will only show "CCS1" once.

The Chargers tab will be read-only on charging stations which are linked to an external provider. If you find an error in the Chargers tab, mark it in the spreadsheet (if applicable), or reach out to your (A)RC so they can address it with staff or the external provider.

Plugs

7 plug types are available in WME. Of these, 4 (with their names in bold below) are commonly found in North America.

• CCS1 - the standard plug for DC fast charging in North America. Also known as "CCS Combo 1". Except the Nissan Leaf and all Tesla models, all new EVs which support DC fast charging include the CCS1 plug. The CCS1 plug is made up of a J1772 plug and two lower pins for DC fast charging.
• CCS2 - not used in North America. European counterpart to CCS1 which combines DC fast charging lower pins with the Type 2 plug instead of the J1772 plug.
• CHAdeMO - a DC fast charging plug which is becoming uncommon in North America but is still used by a handful of EVs. The Nissan Leaf is the only car currently on sale in the U.S. with a CHAdeMO plug.
• GB/T - not used in the United States. The standard in China.
• J1772 - the standard plug for AC charging in the United States. Also known as "Type 1". All EVs on sale today support J1772 – built-into most cars, and via an included adapter for Tesla vehicles.
• Tesla - the plug used by all Tesla models sold in North America. Also known as "North American Charging Standard" or "NACS".
• Type 2 (Mennekes) - not used in North America. The European standard for AC charging (similar to our J1772 standard, but with a different plug).

Access type

Charging stations may be available to the general public, restricted to a certain audience and time-frame, or completely private.

• Public: Public chargers are available to the general public. For example, chargers at a shopping center or a public parking lot or garage.
• Restricted: Restricted chargers are available to the public, but with limitations. For example, a user may charge at a restaurant's charging station, but only while dining. Another example would be a charger for hotel guests.
• Private: Most private chargers will be those at homes, apartments, and workplaces. Private chargers are only available to the homeowner, business's employees and their guests. Additionally, home chargers that are shared via online "plug sharing" networks, but are not available to the public should also be considered private.

Modèle:As of, the production WME supports marking a charging station as public. However, the tooltip descriptions for restricted and private are swapped, as is the order of the buttons in the attribute panel. Do not add any private charging stations. Any pending PURs for private locations should be left open until such time that the access type features are finalized.

Website, Phone, Services, Open hours

As with any other place, include URL, phone number, services, and open hours for the charging station (no one wants to arrive late at night to find it closed). WMEPH can be helpful in ensuring harmonization of naming and details.

Use the customer service phone number if there is one (for example, for a charging network or parking operator).

PlugShare can be used as a resource to verify factual information such as access type, charger location, activation instructions, hours of operation, and so on. If you're not seeing a particular station on PlugShare, check your filters (plugs, location filters, minimum power, networks, etc.).

* Name: ChargePoint location names are often ugly and sometimes non-descriptive, and listed per individual charger (not per charging station). For example, the chargers located together in the New Orleans International Airport long-term parking garage are named "EZ-PARKER STATION1" through "EZ-PARKER STATION9", and chargers installed by the City of New Orleans in partnership with local utility Entergy all start with the string "ENTERGY NO LVL2" and have names like "ENTERGY NO LVL2 CTY PK GOLF CRS" and "ENTERGY NO LVL2 AUDUBON ZOO 2". The station containing these chargers should be named "ChargePoint - MSY Long Term Garage", "ChargePoint - City Park Golf Course", and "ChargePoint - Audubon Zoo", respectively. ** Tesla Supercharger and Electrify America locations typically include a city name in the location name. *** EVgo location names are easiest to find in the EVgo mobile app. Oddly, in the web locator, EVgo location names show up in the search box when you click on a location. EVgo also names their individual chargers with people names, so be sure to use the station name ("Cracker Barrel" or "H-E-B") and not the charger name ("Cooper" or "Deonte").
