Below is the full list of Landmark Types provided by WME as well as information as to which should and should not be mapped in the State of Utah. For those that should be mapped, information is provided on how to properly map them.

When creating Landmarks, please do not forget that a recent update to WME has enabled the Address properties for Landmarks (City, State & Country) and ensure this information is filled out & correct.

Transportation

Gas Station

We've heard from Waze that we SHOULD be creating landmarks for Gas Stations in the US, and there will be changes to the Gas Station system in the US soon. Map as fence line, make sure the landmark does not snap to roads. At this time, the "Name" property should be set to the brand of the gas station (i.e. "Mobil", not "Joe's Town Mobil & Repair"). Due to a rise in independent stations, several have adopted generic names, for these stations, use whatever shows prominently up on the signage. NOTE: Gas Station Landmarks suppress Traffic Jams & Automatic System Detected Errors and as such care should be taken to ensure they don't snap to roads. Also note there is a minimum size for a landmark to appear in the client. So you may need to play with the boundaries to get the Station to appear in the client. But do not let the landmark snap over any adjacent roads, push the landmark edges back over neighboring buildings if needed to get it large enough to show.

Toll booth

Not Mapped. Also, there are no Toll Booths in the state.

Terminal

Not used at this time. Not defined at this time.

Airport

Mapped at the fence line, include parking lots/terminals that are close to the airport in one landmark. Try to avoid crossing non-airport roads with the landmark. Do NOT pave the runways or Taxi-ways. Also be aware of where security check gates are. If it's not open to the public it should not be paved.

Train station

Mapped at the fence line, including parking lot(s) in one landmark, Label as "UT TRAX Ballpark Station", or "Layton FrontRunner Station". Note the different patterns for the different lines. These formats are open to discussion so we can get them standardized.

Bus Station / Bus Terminal

Mapped at the fence line, including parking lot(s) in one landmark.

Sea Port

Feel free to heavily map all of our Sea Ports. ;)

Parking Lot

Listed below are the ONLY parking lots mapped with landmarks, there are several other landmarks that are mapped to cover parking lots associated with those venues. NOTE: Parking Lot Landmarks suppress Traffic Jams & Automatic System Detected Errors and as such care should be taken to ensure they don't snap to roads.

  • Park & Ride Lots are mapped at the fence line, make sure the landmark does not snap to roads. Name these as "UTA Park & Ride" only - no specific names as it would get too long. If associated with a TRAX or FrontRunner include the city or station name as in Layton FrontRunner Park & Ride.
  • Free Public Parking if there are any left in down town SLC, Ogden or Provo please bring them up for discussion in the Utah Forum. If approved, label them with only the "[P]" in the name field.
  • Pay Parking Lots (Private & Municipal) - Not mapped at this time, however, they are currently under discussion. This is possible POI situation, also need to test for the source of the |P| icon that appears when nearing destination.

Please note that parking lots at businesses are not mapped.

Junction/Interchange

Not mapped at this time, however please leave any you see on the map alone as we are currently testing what effect, if any, these have on navigation.

Bridge

Major Bridges Mapped as a rectangle or arc only to include the road. Not a big issue in Utah.

Tunnel

Not Mapped, Utah has no real Tunnels.

Subway station

Not Mapped, Utah has no Subway.

Ferry lane

We really need a Ferry Road Type and an Avoid Ferry option in the client to do this properly, but for now mapped as a rectangle or arc only to include the route. Not really applicable except at Halls crossing.

Car Rental

Not Mapped. Handled by POI Search.

Garage

Not Mapped. Handled by POI Search.

Museum / Visitor Center / Monument

Mapped at the fence line, including parking lot(s) in one landmark.

Mall/Shopping Center

Major Malls/Shopping Centers Mapped at the fence line, including parking lot(s) in one landmark. A "Major" Mall/Shopping Center is defined by those having 45 or more individual stores in the complex. Please note that strip malls & grocery store plazas typically do NOT meet this definition. Primary travel routes through the parking lot should be paved but kept to the bare minimum.

Convenience Store / Kiosk

Not Mapped unless it sells Gasoline, then it's a Gas Station. Handled by POI Search. Should not be paved.

Restaurant / Bar / Coffee Shop

Not Mapped and not paved. Handled by POI Search.

Stadium / Sports Facility

Mapped as building shape, adjacent parking lots are mapped unless separated by a regular street. Internally primary travel routes within the lots will be paved using Parking Lot Roads.

Hotel / Motel / Guest Room

Not Mapped. Handled by POI Search.

Club/Concert Hall

Major Clubs/Concert Halls Mapped at the fence line, including associated parking lot(s) (if attached) in one landmark. Venues are mapped if their PRIMARY function is as a Concert/Performance Venue with a capacity of at least 1,000 people. For venues with multiple stages/halls, use the total combined capacity of all the individual auditoriums in the venue.

Beach

Not Mapped. Handled by POI Search.

Camp site / RV Park

Not Mapped. Handled by POI Search.

Casino

Not Mapped. Handled by POI Search.

Not Mapped. Handled by POI Search.

Nature

Island

Not Mapped.

Sea/Lake/Levee

Not Mapped. Handled by Waze Water Layer.

River/Stream

Not Mapped if already appearing in the client. This is handled by Waze Water Layer in the US. We have no access to that layer. If a body of water is a significant landmark and is not appearing in the client then request consideration in the Utah forum. Example the Jordan River North of the Jordan Narrows diversion dam is not in the water layer and thus not in the client. It is thus now authorized to be mapped in.

Forest/Grove

Not Mapped.

Farmland

Not Mapped.

Gravel

Not Mapped.

Mapped at the fence line, including associated parking lot(s) (if attached) in one landmark. ALL landmarks are named "<City Name> Police Dept" for local departments or "UHP" for the Utah Highway Patrol.

University / College / Academy

Mapped at the fence line, including associated parking lot(s) (if attached) in one landmark. Do not use landmarks to map individual buildings (even if they could qualify as another landmark type), parking lots, or other campus features. This is due to the way landmarks are displayed in the client. The One exception to this is if a Stadium can be marked separate due to it's location on the edge of the campus, example is Lavell Edwards Stadium at BYU is mappeded separate while the Marriott center in the middle of the campus is not.

School / Kindergarten / Junior High / High School

Mapped at the fence line, including associated parking lot(s) (if attached) in one landmark. For the most part only the one way bus pick-up drop-off lanes should be mapped and with Parking Lot Road Type if needed
