Alleys are driveable roads that often provide access to the rear of a business or residence. They can be an important part of the map for routing purposes especially for places with rear access only and for drivers starting a route from an alley.

In the city of Chicago and the suburbs, do not delete already mapped alleys.  Outside the Chicagoland area, alleys may be deleted if they are not necessary for proper routing.

Public alleys SHOULD be mapped if they are named or they are the sole access to a business or residence.
Generally speaking, alleys should only be mapped if they are the sole access to a place or residence.

Public alleys MAY be mapped if they are acknowledged by the municipality or Update Requests (UR's) and GPS tracks indicate the alley is regularly travelled.

If the above criteria are not met, careful consideration should be given to whether the alley should be mapped at all.  If in doubt, always consult the area manager responsible for the segment and/or the state manager.
If an alley is to be mapped or updated, be sure to nudge the house numbers

If the decision is made to map the alley,House Numbers and Stop Points should be nudged to ensure routing to the primary access point for the business or residence. It may also be necessary to nudge the Google Map pin.

Imported house numbers are not used unless verified. They reflect the Google Map pin placement which tends to map to the center of the parcel which often means another driveable street may be closer than the actual street indicated by the address. Touching the house numbers will cause them to be verified which then supports routing to the stop point - usually on the street.
