When a user is routed through an unnamed segment, Waze will automatically use the name of the next named segment on the route. This is useful for getting turn instructions on ramps and turn lanes. This can be confusing in large parking lots.

When Waze uses a name for an unnamed segment

When Waze gives driving directions to turn, exit, or "keep" onto an unnamed segment, it will look for a name it can use. If there is a named road further along your route, it will use that name.

As of January 2015, on most road types, this will be prevented if

  1. the unnamed segment is more than 400 meters long. OR
  2. the unnamed segment is followed by 3 or more unnamed segments before the next named segment.

In this case, when Waze gives instructions to turn into this segment, it will not show or speak a name for the road.

Applications

Example For example, if the next turn is a left onto an unnamed parking lot road and then right onto Main Street, Waze will give directions to turn left onto Main Street and then right onto Main Street.

exit ramp
If a freeway exit ramp leads to a fork in the road, you can leave the name out of the exit ramp. Only name the ramp segments which go to a specific destination. Waze will use the name of the next named ramp after the unnamed exit ramp. This is only useful if the sign for the exit is the same as the sign for the named ramp.
cross street changes name at divided highway
an unnamed segment in the median of the divided roadway ....
parking lot with unnamed roads
if there is a turn/keep instruction onto an unnamed road just before the named road outside the parking lot, Waze will give instructions to make a turn INSIDE the parking lot with a name from OUTSIDE the parking lot. This is confusing for drivers.

____

(To me, it remains unclear what happens if an unnamed ramp is longer than 400 meters or have more than three segments, and the next named segment is not a freeway or ramp, e.g., when going to a major highway). -- moweez
I believe the rules about 400m OR 3 mor unnamed roads applies (except for 2types) ONLY to the "instruction for maneuver into unnamed" segment. I also believe we will continue to be unhappy in parking lots until we have name, "none" and "inherit" for segment name options. --Voludu2 (talk) 01:40, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
