geographical division

From geographical point of view, India is divided into 6 Zonal Councils.

Northern Zonal Council
  • Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and the Union Territory of Chandigarh
  • From MHA: The Northern Zonal Council, comprising the States of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, National Capital Territory of Delhi and Union Territory of Chandigarh;
North-Central Zonal Council
  • Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and National Capital Territory of Delhi
  • From MHA: The Central Zonal Council, comprising the States of Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh;
North-Eastern Zonal Council
  • Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura;Sikkim
  • From MHA: The North Eastern States i.e. (i) Assam (ii) Arunachal Pradesh (iii) Manipur (iv) Tripura (v) Mizoram (vi) Meghalaya and (vii) Nagaland are not included in the Zonal Councils and their special problems are looked after by the North Eastern Council, set up under the North Eastern Council Act, 1972. Also including the State of Sikkim
Eastern Zonal Council Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, ]], West Bengal and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands
  • From MHA: The Eastern Zonal Council, comprising the States of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Sikkim and West Bengal;
Western Zonal Council Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu
  • From MHA: The Western Zonal Council, comprising the States of Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra and the Union Territories of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli
Southern Zonal Council Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and the Union Territories Lakshadweep and Puducherry
  • From MHA: The Southern Zonal Council, comprising the States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

administrative division

The administrative division of India consist of 29 States and 7 Union Territories. These are listed in the State field in WME. Each State or Union Territory is divided into smaller administrative areas, called “Districts”. These in turn are further divided into "sub-districts".
