Mapping

Motorways and dual carriageways must be mapped as two parallel one-way segments in opposing directions. Set motorways to "freeway", dual carriageways to "major highway" segment type.

The segments should be named as M[xx] [N/E/S/W] or N[xx] [N/E/S/W]. Use the cardinal directions displayed on road-side signs. Set "city" to None and "state" to the appropriate county.

Set road shields as "motorway 1-3" (blue background with "chopsticks" motorway icon) for M-roads, "national route" (green background) for N-roads, "regional road" (white background with black border) for R-roads.

Appropriate speed limits must be set, change points must be at the location of existing traffic signs. In case traffic signs and other information (eg. road surface markings or published by-laws) don't match, follow the traffic signs.

Junctions

Map all on- and off-ramps following the below practices.

Create an area place around the junction with the category "Junction/interchange". Make sure to include all ramps and the main road itself. The name of this place must be set to [road name] Junction XX (eg. M50 Junction 16).

On-ramps

A motorway or dual carriageway on-ramp must be mapped as a one-way "ramp" (segment type).

They should be named as to [number of motorway/dual carriageway the ramp leads to] N/E/S/W. (For example to N4 W)

The entry point (ie. point where the on-ramp joins the motorway/dual carriageway) should be placed at the first possible place where the driver can legally change lanes, ie. the gore point (where the solid white line ends).

Turn instructions must be set up for the starting point of the on-ramp following what's written on road-side signs. Use English language names for destinations where available. Use Irish names in Gaeltacht areas or where English names are otherwise not available.

  • Add the shield of the motorway/dual carriageway the on-ramp leads to in Turn instructions along with the first destination shown on road signs.
  • Add any subsequent destinations in Toward.
  • TTS should be set as [number of motorway/dual carriageway the ramp leads to] > [place(s) the motorway/dual carriageway leads to] following what's written on road-side traffic signs. The > character is read as "towards" by TTS. (For example N4 > Sligo)

Off-ramps

A motorway or dual carriageway off-ramp must be mapped as a one-way "ramp" (segment type).

They should be named as J[exit number] [number of main road the ramp leads to] > [place(s) the ramp leads to] following what's written on the exit signs on the side of the motorway. (For example J16 R118 > Cherrywood, Loughlinstown)

When adding/editing off-ramps on a motorway or dual carriageway we want to make sure the ramp splits off from the main road segment at the last possible place where the driver can legally change lanes, ie. the gore point (where the solid white line starts). This is to ensure navigation instructions don't disappear prematurely causing confusion while driving. The split's angle must be set between 20º and 45º to ensure correct instructions and navigation.

In case of more complex off-ramps where the ramp itself branches off in different directions the location of the branching point should be mapped following the same practice.

Lane guidance must be set for the node where the ramp begins to show instructions for the turn, but the guidance for the lanes continuing straight should be set to "Waze default" so they don't show up for traffic continuing on. For turning traffic guidance can be set up in one of three ways depending:

  • If there isn't a significant exit lane and the ramp branches directly out of the leftmost main road lane: set the leftmost lane's guidance for both the exit and main road's directions; set all other lanes just for the main road's direction.
  • If there is an exit lane, but it's only a shorter one: set the number of lanes to include the exit lane, then set the guidance of the exit lane for the exit direction and the remaining lanes for the main road's direction.
  • If there is a longer exit lane: set lane guidance the same as above. Additionally create a second node where the exit lane first begins and set up a Path starting here going onto the off-ramp. Set up lane guidance at this node with a "keep left" far turn instruction for the off-ramp's direction. (Note: only higher level editors can add/edit Paths; reach out to one of them if you don't have the necessary access.)

Turn instructions must be set up for all split points following what's written on road-side signs. Use English language names for destinations where available. Use Irish names in Gaeltacht areas or where English names are otherwise not available.

  • Add the shield of the main road the ramp or branch leads to (where applicable) in Turn instructions along with the first destination shown on road signs.
  • Add any subsequent destinations in Toward.
  • Add the blue arrow exit sign for M-roads, or the white arrow exit sign for N-roads along with the exit's number.
  • Leave the Voice prompt on "Waze selected" as this will default to saying "exit left/right" for correctly mapped ramps.
  • TTS should be set as Exit[exit number], [number of main road the ramp leads to] > [place(s) the ramp leads to] following what's written on the exit signs on the side of the road. Note the comma after the exit number; this must be added for correctly spoken voice instructions. The > character is read as "towards" by TTS. (For example Exit 16, R118 > Cherrywood, Loughlinstown)
