Off-ramps

A motorway off-ramp must be mapped as a one-way "ramp" (segment type).

They should be named as J[exit number] [number of main road the ramp leads to] > [place(s) the ramp leads to] following what's written on the exit signs on the side of the motorway. (For example J16 R118 > Cherrywood, Loughlinstown)

Appropriate speed limits must be set, change points must be at the location of existing traffic signs. In case traffic signs and other information (eg. road surface markings) don't match, we follow the traffic signs.

When adding/editing off-ramps on a motorway we want to make sure the ramp splits off from the main motorway segment at the last possible place where the driver can legally change lanes, ie. the gore point (where the solid white line starts). This is to ensure navigation instructions don't disappear prematurely causing confusion while driving. The split's angle must be set between 20º and 45º to ensure correct instructions and navigation.

In case of more complex off-ramps where the ramp itself branches off in different directions the location of the branching point should be mapped following the same practice.

Turn instructions must be set up for all off-ramps following what's written on road-side exit signs:

  • Add the shield of the main road the ramp leads to (where applicable) in Turn instructions along with the first destination shown on the road sign.
  • Add any subsequent destinations in Toward.
  • Add the blue arrow exit sign for M-roads, or the white arrow exit sign for N-roads along with the exit's number.
  • Leave the Voice prompt on "Waze selected" as this will default to saying "exit left/right" for correctly mapped ramps.
  • TTS should be set as Exit[exit number], [number of main road the ramp leads to] > [place(s) the ramp leads to] following what's written on the exit signs on the side of the motorway. (For example Exit 16, R118 > Cherrywood, Loughlinstown)
