Welcome, New Jersey Wazers! (Please note that this page is a work in progress, and owes much to other pages here from which the general format was copied!)

If you are an editor or area manager working in or around New Jersey, please update this Wiki with the areas where you are working! If you need help in editing the wiki see How to edit wiki pages. Sounds scary but it's easy; just watch this short video.

Please feel free to contact me at the forum using the link below if you have questions about this page, about editing, or about life in general. :)

Please see Map Editing & Editing Best Practices for a starting point on how to edit the map.

'NJ Road Types:'

  • Freeways are any divided road type with high speed limits and controlled access via interchanges only. Toll roads with controlled access, such as the Garden State Pkwy, New Jersey Tpke, and Atlantic City Expy all count as the freeway type. All Interstate highways with the red, white, and blue shield markers are also freeways. Additionally, several US and state routes have also been improved enough to be considered freeways.
  • Major Highways are other divided roads that still have high speed limits but may contain limited at-grade intersections with signals. In New Jersey, many major highways have the jug handle ramps to accommodate turning traffic at these intersections. Major highways should also avoid dense urban city streets that would require a lower speed limit.
  • Minor Highways are any other road, fast or not, that has markers which can be followed across the state. State routes with the black and white circle shield markers that are not improved enough to qualify as major highways would be minor highways. The 500-series county routes, since they maintain continuity across county lines throughout the state, should also be minor highways. We are waiting for confirmation for the stricken statement. Please also note that despite this road type's name, minor highways do not necessarily need to maintain any kind of high speed limits along their entire route.
  • Primary Streets are local collector roads that connect individual neighborhoods to the various highway types. The non-500-series county roads found throughout the state should be primary streets. We are waiting for confirmation for the stricken statement. Also, any other more local road that spans subdivisions, crosses railroad tracks, creeks, rivers, or freeways, or has full access to a highway, typically at a signal, can also be primary streets.
  • Streets are neighborhood subdivision streets. You can technically and legally drive through to other places on streets, even though it is usually not preferred because of their speeds.
  • Parking lot roads are used to define the boundaries and major thoroughfares of parking lots. The Waze routing engine will not select parking lot roads unless there are no other road types closer to the origin you are starting at or destination you are going to. This prevents Waze from routing through parking lots. Also, parking lot roads do not record how fast you move across them, so they will not show up as traffic congested if you stop on them or move too slowly.
  • Private roads are other roads where traffic generally moves but should not be used for general routing. Examples of private roads are gated communities, military reservations, or other private campuses with restricted access. Unlike their parking lot road counterparts however, private roads can show up as traffic congested if you stop along them or move too slowly, and as such, private roads should not be used for parking lots.
  • Ramps are connector roads to, from, or between highways. The interchange roads along freeways or major highways with overpass intersections are all ramps. Ramps can have long names so that they can accurately reflect the exit signage that is often seen as they are approached, so their names are suppressed on the map. For this reason, at-grade jug handle ramps on the state's major highways that have exit-style signage should also be ramps. Other at-grade connectors that do not have exit style signage should follow the general rules for at-grade connectors.

Primary issues for Interstate and Major Freeway work

  • remove excess junction nodes (those not at intersections or at city-name changes)
  • inspect and correct connectivity of necessary junctions
  • update highway and ramp segment "road types"
  • update all segment "Street Names" in accordance with the standards published in the Wiki -- for example
    • INTERSTATE:
      • I-80 E
      • I-295 N
    • US HIGHWAYS:
      • "Split" (1-way) segments: US-46 W
      • "Unsplit" (2-way) segments: US-206
    • STATE ROUTES:
      • "Split": SR-17 S
      • "Unsplit": SR-27
    • OFFRAMP:
      • numbered exit: Exit 8C: Monmouth Blvd
      • numbered exit with multiple names: Exit 135: Clark / Westfield
      • non-numbered exit: Exit to US-9 S / Lakewood
    • ONRAMP:
      • to I-80 W / Delaware Water Gap
      • to I-287 N / Morristown / Mahwah
  • inspect and correct overpasses/underpasses to ensure that the segments are on different levels and do not have a junction node where they meet
