WELCOME
Welcome to the Alabama and north Florida MapRaid! We appreciate whatever your contribution will be, whether many edits to the map or just a few. Each and every additional edit moves us one step forward and improves the quality of the map!
A MapRaid (MR) brings editors together from across the community, pooling all efforts onto a specific area within our region for a short and focussed burst of editing activity. How is this done? All participants will be granted the ability to edit within the complete MR area for the duration of the raid. Each of you will be attached to a raid group with an assigned geographical area pulled from the entire MR area and given a list of editing priorities. It will be your task to work with your group to help address those objectives!
Please read this entire MapRaid wiki. If you are uncertain or have questions about how to address something, please consult with your group leaders.
MISSION & PRIORITIES
Our mission for this MapRaid is to improve Wazers' experiences with the client in Alabama and north Florida. Finding a place in search (with complete and accurate business / entity details) and arriving at the correct location in a timely manner is extremely important! To do this, our primary goal is to update as many places as possible and to resolve any existing place-based routing issues on the map.
These are our editing priorities:
- Place Point (PP) & Area Place (AP),
- Place Update Request (PUR),
- Residential Place Point (RPP),
- Parking Lot Road (PLR),
- House Numbers (HN),
- Map Problem (MP), and,
- Parking Lot Area (PLA). (Please work PLAs after priorities 1 thru 6 have been addressed.)
Please read this entire MapRaid wiki. If you are uncertain or have questions about how to address something, please consult with your group leaders.

COMMUNICATION
All communications for this MapRaid, will be made in the Waze "Southeast" Discord server within the "SER MAP RAID" category.
Discord Channels
There is one general channel plus each raid group has its own channel for their internal communications.
Submit all Update / Unlock requests in your group channel. These are the MapRaid channels:
- Group 0 - Chat : Hang out for all raiders to get acquainted with each other.
- Group 1 - Mobile Group 2 - Pensacola Group 3 - Dothan/PC Group 4 - Montgomery
- Group 5 - Birmingham Group 6 - Florence Group 7 - Tuscaloosa Group 8 - Huntsville
Requesting Help
SER has a specific format, or shorthand, editors use to ask for help. (Many raiders are familiar with this.)
- Change in lock level - Unlock/Lock or Down-lock/Up-lock. Only one request is needed to go through an unlock, edit, and re-lock of an item. (This is explained more below.)
Current Level -> Desired Level, City, State Planned Edits (Purpose) Permalink (PL) REAL LIFE EXAMPLE NEEDED
- PUR approval or rejection:
Desired Lock Level, City, State PUR Action Requested Permalink (PL) REAL LIFE EXAMPLE NEEDED
- Editor Responses to requests. An editor can be signal what he's done by attaching the appropriate emoticon to the Discord post:

EDITING BASICS
WME Settings
- Review your WME settings and preferences to verify that North America only environment and US English is active.
- Verify that you are visible to other editors.
Required Map Layers
Ensure these layers are enabled during MR editing:
- Live Users allows you to see other editors in your map vicinity.
- Map Comments
Rank-based Editing Restrictions
Level 1 and Level 2 editor map editing restrictions remain in effect during the raid.
PLACE EDITING GUIDANCE
The Southeast region follows the USA Places guidance. Any exceptions or deviations from that are explained in the Southeast Region (SER) wiki. If you are uncertain or have questions about how to address something you see on the map, please ask your group leader.
Places NOT mapped
If you find a place from this list on the map (despite this guidance) it will be locked to at least level 5:
- interchanges/junctions
- water of any kind
- islands
- beaches
- toll plazas
Mapping Style - Area or Point
In SER, the following place categories are mapped either as an area (AP) or as a point (PP) in exception to USA Places guidance:
Place type | Mapping Style | Place type | Mapping Style | |
---|---|---|---|---|
City Hall | Area Place | Campground | Point Place | |
Government | Area Place | Car Dealership | Point Place | |
Library | Area Place | RV Park | Point Place | |
Museum | Area Place | |||
Post Office | Area Place | |||
Sports Court | Area Place |
Mapping Area Places (APs):
- Most are mapped as basic polygons reflecting the building footprint.
- Gas stations are mapped to the fenceline or parcel boundaries.
- Multi-building campuses, e.g. schools & universities, are mapped as one large polygon inclusive of all parcel boundaries.
Place Marker & Entry Point Locations
WORKING ON THIS DIALOG: Ensure the Place marker is in the correct spot. Verify an entry point (if present) is anchored to the correct location on a segment for optimal routing.
Special Place-Category Guidance
- Gas Stations (USA wiki) NOTE: Do NOT add u-turns to PLRs in gas stations in SER.
Place Details: General Tab
WORKING ON THIS DIALOG: Especially for this MapRaid, every place should have as much detail completed as possible.
Name.
Name the business/entity as it is shown on their website or from another approved source.
- Place located inside another Place. Append to the place name " ( "inside" other place name) ". (The WMEPH script will ignore the information inside the parenthesis and pull the correct harmonization information.)
Ex: Target's CVS Pharmacies are named CVS Pharmacy (inside Target)
- Gas Stations. Be sure to follow national guidance for how to name special cases. (Please, use a hyphen "-" to separate business names.)
Address.
A full, complete address must be present; a "City" name must be present.
- For RPPs, use the USPS mailing address city for the "City" name.
- For all others places (PPs, APs, and PLAs,) the "City" name, as well as the rest of the address, is determined by the business or entity. Use whatever address it identifies on the official or claimed website.
Category.
- Link to SER's local guidance for category selection. USA wiki on place categories
- Please consult your group leader if you have questions on which category to use.

Verify that the website IS owned by that business or entity. (A facebook page may only be used if the business does not have its own listing and the facebook page is not "Unclaimed".)
Verify that the URL works before adding it to a place in WME.
Use the URL that will take you directly to the homepage for the business or entity.
- For public schools, enter the URL provided by the school. (They make extensive efforts to keep their naming schemes.)
- For Businesses with multiple locations (chains or franchises e.g.), please use the simplest URL that will get you to the main or general business webpage. (Please do not link directly to the a location-specific page.)
Services.
Please review the list of services in WME AND select all those which apply.
Open Hours.
- If hours include words (and cannot be put here), please note what they are in the Description.

Residential Place Points (RPP)
REITERATE REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL RPP MAPPING
Place Update Requests (PUR)
IMPORTANT: When editing a PUR, at a minimum, Zoom in to Level 7 (10m or 50').
Run the WME Place Harmonizer script to make sure everything is correct and entered.
per SER guidance (Go beyond green!)
Map Problems (MP)
- Bring PLAs to region standards before approving and closing the MP.
Parking Lot Areas (PLA)
SEGMENT EDITING GUIDANCE
The Southeast region follows the USA guidance for editing Roads. Any exceptions or deviations from that are explained in the Southeast Region (SER) wiki. If you are uncertain or have questions about how to address something you see on the map, please ask your group leader.
Parking Lot Roads (PLR)
SER follows USA wiki guidance for Parking Lot Roads, except, for the following:
- Do NOT place u-turns on PLRs.
- Do NOT add u-turns to gas stations PLRs or PLRs within a PLA.
- Do NOT map transition penalty segments. (These can be added to solve an issue documented in a UR.)
Driveways
- Add driveways only if needed to support RPP routing.
House Numbers (HN)
Toll roads ~ WARNING
REGARDLESS of RANK, Do not edit a toll road segment without talking to your group leader. (Questions will be escalated to the SER leadership team.) |
Toll roads have pricing contained in price files that are separate from WME but linked through segment and node IDs. If any of these IDs or their order are changed through cutting, merging, disconnection or deletion, the toll price file will not work. Much more detailed information is in the USA wiki for Tolls.
Segment Lock Level
The entire Southeast region (SER) observes the segment locking standards in the chart below.
There are some cases that do not adhere to this standard, such as any theme park type areas in Orlando (5/6). Further, all gates at gated communities / private installation should be locked to at least 5.
Segment Type | Default locks |
---|---|
Freeway | 5 |
Ramp | 5 |
Major Highway | 5 |
Minor Highway | 4 |
Primary Street | 3 |
Street | 1 |
• • • • Ferry • • • • | 5 |
|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Railroad |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| | 2 |
Other roads may be locked higher for protection and special situations (areas with construction, tricky design, frequent mistakes, incorrect images, etc.).
If you believe a segment lock level is incorrect, please talk to your group leader before making any changes.
When you have finished editing a segment, please ensure the lock level is set correctly. If you are unable to lock it to that level, please lock it as high as you can and ask your group leader to up-lock or raise the segment lock to the correct level.
BEYOND MAP RAID SCOPE - Do NOT Edit
Any major issues that need to be addressed will be followed up on by local editors after the MapRaid's conclusion. Please notify your group leader of any large issues you find.
New Parking Lot Areas (new PLA)
Update Requests (UR)
- Local Editors
Functional Class (FC)
- Do not make FC changes. All are current and set per state standards. If you do find an issue, please notify your group leaders so it will be addressed after the MapRaid concludes.
Cameras
New red light cameras are rare. (There are none currently in the MapRaid area.) If you find one, please notify your group leader. |

(The USA wiki Script page lists and explains the features of some of the most popular ones available.) The MR committee suggests that each editor install and enable the following tools and scripts for editing assistance to meet the MR goals. Community Plugins, Extensions and Tools
Tools
- A script manager is required. Recommend the installation of TamperMonkey. (Some scripts do not work with the current version of GreaseMonkey.)
- For Chrome users, required installation of Toolbox Extension.
- USPS Zip Code Look-up tool. Primary source for alternate city name(s). (Alternate look-up tools are available there.)
Customized Scripts (AL-NoFL MR)
Place Editing Assistance
- WMEPH - Place Harmonization.
- WME PIE (aka PIE) - Place Interface Enhancements.
- GIS Layers - Find parcel HN and street name, physical location on map, primary city name.
- GIS Buttons - (Google API required.) Active button(s)provide direct link to primary sources for parcel HN and street name, physical location on map, primary city name. Sources can have leads for alternate city name. (Helpful when GIS Layer data is unavailable.)
- US Government Boundaries - Find parcel zip code to use at USPS lookup website to determine alternate city name(s). (Be sure to enable zip code and county layers.)

Elements to be Evaluated / Blended into this wiki
GENERAL ISSUES:
- Fix MR wiki title: should be AL-NoFL
- Formatting inconsistencies (font type/color and working links) are known issues
- Expanded/Collapsed format ? (emphasizes needs; quick jump to correct part through ToC / Wiki length; excessive detail)
- Import of team members into wiki table? Who and When?
SCOPE OF MapRaid:
- Limiting shopping mall editing to individual shop PPs? (No consensus yet on how to deploy Pedestrian Paths in SER.)
CLARIFY and/or FURTHER DEFINE GUIDANCE:
Area places mapping geometry?
- Which are building footprint (approximate) : Shopping mall, ..................?
- Which are to fence and/or parcel boundaries : Gas stations, Campuses (School, Universities, Hospitals..............)?
Multiple Entry Points for SER? - national guidance has been published; no mention in SER wiki
Other Issues?
"Beyond the Scope" ITEMS TO HIGHLIGHT
ANY OTHER ITEMS TO HIGHLIGHT (Important for Places)
- Specific Services? (AC, Handicap Access, Parking, Restrooms, .... ?)
NEW GUIDANCE (not in SER wiki)
- ADD? For 3rd party imports : Descriptions. Leave as is or trim? If trimming, how? (This was asked in KS/MO MR raid.)
- ADD? "Do not map home-based businesses"? (No business places should be mapped inside neighborhoods.)
- ADD?
- ADD?
NEW CAPABILITY for MR
- ADD? Form Filler script option, "ex-MR issue?", where editors record issues they've identified which are outside the mapraid scope? (The resulting gsheet can be shared with SER editors after MR ends for fixing.)
