Forest Service Roads

While editing in Waze is generally focused improving the mapping of populated areas, providing accurate routes to destinations in unpopulated areas can greatly increase the safety of drivers who may choose to take Waze into the wilderness. In Oregon, most of these unpopulated destinations lie within National Forests which encompass nearly 1/4 of our state. The roads within these forests are maintained by the US Forest Service, which uses a numerical designation which acts to express both functional classification and show the relationship between "parent" and "child" roads.

Mapping Resources

At this point, the most useful map for Waze editing in National Forest lands is the Forest Service Topographical (FSTopo) map. This map is believed to provide the most up to date road types and road condition assessments among the many products provided by the Forest Service, including the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM).
