City names should use the name by which an area is primarily known. In many cases, this is the incorporated municipality name. Other locally accepted names are also used when appropriate. Some examples include:

* When locals, businesses and editors know an area by a non-incorporated name (e.g., Basking Ridge of Bernards Township)
===== Primary City Naming =====
* When editors have added suffixes to address city naming conflicts (e.g., Washington Twp for Washington Township)
Primary city names should use the name by which an area is primarily known. In many cases, this is either a Census-designated Place (CDP) or the incorporated municipality name. Using a CDP as a primary city name is helpful when:
* Overlapping municipal names have overlapping street names
* A CDP is also used in postal addressing
Other primary names must be discussed and agreed upon by NJ State Management before implementing into Waze Map Editor.

===== Alternative City Naming =====
Alternative city names may be added to segments to help identify an incorporated municipality if a CDP is used a a primary name. Alternative naming can also help override Google addressing when searching a postal address that is different than the incorporated municipality. In this case, you should add the postal address city and street to the alternative naming field.

Much of the city names in Waze come from the original map import. Some of these city names need to be updated to reflect current guidance. Any segment with a city name "Greater XX Area" or “XX (2)” is a mistake, and should be corrected. In the past, we have included unique suffixes to address city naming conflicts. We used these techniques to differentiate municipalities when they shared the same name (e.g.,  Washington; Washington Twp; Washington Township; Washington Twp, Burlington; etc.). Unique city names are no longer required, and different towns can share the same city name within the Waze database. If you discover one, follow the steps below or reach out to State Managers for assessment:

In the case of incorporated municipalities sharing borders with another municipality of the same name (e.g., the Borough of Clinton and the Township of Clinton), you may name both municipalities as Clinton.

In the case of incorporated municipalities sharing the same name within close proximity (e.g., the Borough of Raritan and the Township of Raritan), you may use city smudging guidance and include the suffix for the Township. In this case, you would use Raritan and Raritan Twp.

It is important to include all names that could be searched for within the alternative naming fields to prevent routing issues. For example, places using a postal city name could cause routing problems unless the adjacent segments include the same city name in the alternative city naming field.

In NJ there are 565 municipalities, 250 Boroughs, 52 Cities, 15 Towns, 245 Townships and 3 Villages. There are no unincorporated places in the state of NJ. Every segment of every road type should have a name in the Primary Field. New Jersey follows the guidance below.

City Naming

Primary City Naming

Primary city names should use the name by which an area is primarily known. In many cases, this is either a Census-designated Place (CDP) or the incorporated municipality name. Using a CDP as a primary city name is helpful when:

  • Overlapping municipal names have overlapping street names
  • A CDP is also used in postal addressing

Other primary names must be discussed and agreed upon by NJ State Management before implementing into Waze Map Editor.

Alternative City Naming

Alternative city names may be added to segments to help identify an incorporated municipality if a CDP is used a a primary name. Alternative naming can also help override Google addressing when searching a postal address that is different than the incorporated municipality. In this case, you should add the postal address city and street to the alternative naming field.

Updating City Names

This section contains guidance on when it's appropriate to update a city name. Read this information prior to asking questions. If you have questions or would like to propose changes, post a new reply to this forum topic.

Much of the city names in Waze come from the original map import. Some of these city names need to be updated to reflect current guidance. Any segment with a city name "Greater XX Area" or “XX (2)” is a mistake, and should be corrected. If an entire area is affected with misnamed segments, use the Cities Form to request Waze to update its database.

When updating city name fields, please use the following guidance:

Field Name Guidance
City (primary) CDP name or incorporated municipality
City (alternative names) Postal city name and incorporated municipality (if not used in primary city)

It is important to include all names that could be searched for within the alternative naming fields to prevent routing issues. For example, places using a postal city name could cause routing problems unless the adjacent segments include the same city name in the alternative city naming field.
