Roads

Naming rules

  1. If a road is part of an Asian highway the AH notation goes into the primary name. All other road numbers and / or names should go into the alternative street names.
  2. Otherwise, if the roadtype is national highway than our standard rule is keeping the old NH-number in the primary street name until user reports or pictures (road signs) give evidence that the new number is being used. The new number can be added as alternative street name. If the new highway name is really used the new NH-number should be used as primary street name and the old NH-number goes to the alternative name.
  3. Otherwise, If a road is part of the Major District Roads network as highest roadtype the MDR-number can be used as primary name.
  4. If the road is used by more than one roadtype of the same level (AH, NH, SH, MDR) the lowest number should be used as primary name and the higher number can be added as alternative name.
  5. If the road is an unnumbered primary street or just an ordinary street, the street name if known can be used as primary name. If no name is known, check None.

If a bridge has a specific well-known name the piece of road crossing the bridge can have the name of the bridge as primary name.

Asian Highway Network

Several Asian Highways are running across India.
Use AH plus number (without a hyphen) as street name notation, like: AH1, AH42.

In 2010 a new numbering system for the National Highway network was introduced. The new numbering system is based on the orientation (east-west and north-south) and the geographic location of the highway. Still for many highways the old highway number is used.

Use as street name notation NH-# where # stands for the highway number, like NH-72.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is the national government agency that is responsible for the highways.

State Highways

Use as street name notation SH-# where # stands for the state highway number, like SH-25.
The individual states are responsible for their state highways.

Major District Roads

Use as street name notation MDR-# where # stands for the Major district Road number, like MDR-110.
