This new page is currently undergoing modifications. The information presented should be considered a draft, not yet ready for use. Content is being prepared by one or more users. Do not make any changes before you post a message in this forum.

This page is being developed as a template for all USA state pages. Current pages being considered as a guideline for some or all of their content include:

I have made the comments appear on the standard page for easy review by all concerned. They will stay in the final template as editor comments, not to be visible on the final page when read normally.

<!--Instructions to the editor first setting up this template for STATENAME.

1. Copy the content of this page under edit mode.

2. If the page STATENAME currently exists, paste this content on a temporary page, otherwise paste it on the STATENAME page.

3. Globally search and replace STATENAME with the name of the target state.

4. Review the notes in edit mode and make the appropriate changes noted.

5. Integrate any content from a current state page as needed.

6. Review the final proposed page with other editors in your state.

7. Resist moving sections around in this template because all states are being set up this same way. If necessary add subsections to current sections. New sections should be reviewed with other state editors to keep the template as similar as possible.-->

This page serves as a key resource for editors in STATENAME. Review all the sections to better understand how the guidelines for this state might deviate from the overall USA or worldwide guidelines. If you have questions refer to the forum links below.

Overview

New Mexico is using this section to identify key differences from other states that would be important to editors.

<!--The initial editor of this page should provide an overview of the state covering things like the environmental differences with the state compared to others. See New Mexico for examples. -->

Mapping resources

Virtually every state has links to other resources. Now some states have links to general editing instructions. I recommend we only have the state pages link to an editing manual page where we can ensure the best guidelines are always updated on that page for all states. If that current page needs updating, then let's update it.

I recommend we move this section to the top of the page as the first section.

Before editing the maps in STATENAME, but sure to fully review and understand the editing manual.

The following links can be helpful when editing STATENAME.

<!--Add links to resources applicable for STATENAME.-->

Forum

Most states have this already, so it should be easy to match for all states.

I recommend we move this section to the second section of the page after the resources section.

The Waze forum is a great place to find answers to previously asked questions and also a place to ask new ones. Below is a link to the forums specific to STATENAME, the regional forum for the state, and the main USA forum page.

<!-- change to specific forums of state-->

Area Managers for STATENAME can be found in the table below.

Cities and towns

What is the primary goal of this section? Are there states with cities that are unnamed? Or is this more about when and how to name CDPs? Either way we should explain why this section is here since we are not just listing city names for the sake of listing them. One example is Connecticut/Cities and towns.

The Pennsylvania#Cities_and_towns page lists a number of interesting points (some may not be completely correct for all states) that we may want to consider making generic for all states.

I see MA has some additional specific guidelines for this section that make sense for MA, so that is a good example for having this section.

There are 169 cities and towns in the state. See STATENAME/Cities and towns for proper naming information.

Duplicate cities can be caused by incorrectly named segments and should be corrected following the guidelines in the smudged city article.

Major roads

The state specific page for Roads by type (third link below) does not appear to be active for most states and would be removed for states that don't have it. One example is Connecticut/Roads by type.

PA has two detailed sections on road naming that we may want to consider to include parts or links (Pennsylvania#Standard_abbreviations and Pennsylvania#Major_roads

Texas has a subsection on road naming that might be better in the subpage (link 3) below.

Texas has FC information in this section. I recommend we keep it in the to do list section on a unique page.

STATENAME follows the general road naming and type guidelines of the USA. See Road names/USA, Road types/USA and STATENAME/Roads by type.

Places

If a state has specific guidelines different from the rest of the country, it would be noted here. Currently Texas has a complete list of Places noting when they should be points or areas. This deviation from the rest of the USA is being discussed in the forums. If it is decided to be kept, the sheer size of that table may suggest it be moved to a subpage of Texas and linked to this section.

Texas notes that some parts of a military base are approved for labeling as a place. If this is generally accepted it should be moved to the Places page (unless unique to Texas).

<!--Modify details as applicable for STATENAME.-->

STATENAME follows the USA standard for Places. It is recommended that the guidelines in that page are not deviated unless discussed in the state forum linked below.

Major construction projects

Some states have a full subpage on tracking construction projects and others just link to the state's DOT.gov page.

<!--Add external links to applicable content for state.-->

The major construction projects for STATENAME can be found on this DOT web page.

When managing a section of roadway under construction, follow the guidelines on construction zones and road closures.

<!--Add additional specific information on road closures as required for this state.-->

Special roads

This appears to be more of a list of editing manual page links. There are others like the Junction Style Guide and the linked pages inside it that we might want to reference as well.

PA includes a note on Pennsylvania#Alleys that is specific to the state. I added the general Alley link for other states to use the general form. Currently it is part of the Parking Lot Road section, so we might want to consider creating a small section on Alleys to identify why there are some states that differ.

Texas has a section on Military bases that I recommend we simply add as a link in the blow list and add whatever is necessary on that page.

<!--Modify details as applicable for STATENAME.-->

STATENAME follows the standard USA guidelines for all of the following special road types.

Non-drivable roads

Is this generally universal for all states? Can we link to the one page in the Wiki and only list deviations here? Note that some states like CT incorrectly guide editors NOT to map any of the non-drivable road types.

<!--Modify details as applicable for STATENAME. Add links to the sections where the state specific guidelines may be different from the USA guidelines.-->

Review the guidelines for non-drivable roads to ensure compliance with the general guidelines.

Cameras

Because many states are different from each other, this section is very important to be covered uniquely for each state.

The Texas page has a recommendation for how cameras should be entered from the client. I would recommend we move that recommendation into the camera page and make it universal for all camera placement locations.

Not every camera-looking device at an intersection is a speed or red light camera. Be sure to know your cameras before accepting new camera reports. Currently only the Waze client app can add cameras to the map. When adding a camera from the app, be sure to review the camera placement recommendations.

Speed cameras

Speed cameras are (legal/illegal) in STATENAME. These cameras take a photograph of a vehicle when it passes by at too high a speed. Refer to the Cameras page for specific information.

Red light cameras

Red light cameras are (legal/illegal) in STATENAME. These cameras take a photograph of a vehicle that enters an intersection after the light is red. Refer to the Cameras page for specific information.

<!--Some states have additional regulations or specific localities that relate to speed and red light cameras. That information should be added here.-->

To do list

Some states have it and others don't. I recommend we always make it an entire subpage. The subpage would then break out the different types of to do lists like places, FC updates, etc. That allows this page to stay clean and consistent and we could also have a general to do link for each state from a single USA page if needed.

If you are an active editor in this state, consider reviewing the "to do" list for the state at STATENAME/To do list.

Area Managers

Most states already use this same basic format, so we might as well all use it. This is from Connecticut.

The table below identifies the editors with a rank at least that of an Area Manager who participate in editing in STATENAME. If you have any questions, please consider contacting them directly as needed.
